Mathias is a Skydancer who's heart aches and lives in the past. Haunted by his hatchling-hood when he lived with his parents in Dragonhome, he remembers very clearly the disease that swept through the Clan, taking the life of his mother. Mathias rarely speaks of his past, only having told it once to Lillia who in turn quietly explained it to the Seven Major Protectors and a select group of trusted friends. Despite the other's best efforts to bring him out of his shell, he seems to forever stuck in his past, but recently there have been an increasing amount of moments where he breaks down his guard, even if only for a moment. He remembers that his mother smelled of roses and gardenias and jasmine. He remembers watching oils be extracted from herbs in pots on the fire. He remembers the way she would crinkle her eyes as she read to him, and he remembers the frigid looks she would give his father if they disagreed. When she grew sick, he couldn't see her anymore. And when she died, there were roses and gardenias and jasmine. And while his heart ached and he raged against the blossoms on her grave, he hated them. But as he grew older, he realized that those flowers gave him anchors to her. Their sweet perfumes reminded him of the sound of her working, the touch of her fur, the bold stare of her pale eyes. He has taken to perfuming not to follow his mother, but to honor his memories of her. He wants others to associate their families with the gentle aromas of sage and cedar, and to be able to give those scents to them again so that they may remember what they have lost. Mathias has long since then taken up the art of making perfumes, incense, and other such scent-related items. Because he lost his mother so young, Mathias carries her death like a heavy burden in his heart. He helps tend to the Clan's gardens, but the other Clanmembers have long since noticed that the flowers, especially the roses and jasmine, seem to make him very sad. They all know the basics of his story, but Mathias almost never speaks about his past, and thus the Clan leaves him be, knowing it would do them nor him any good. mathias, whenever he comes across them, often picks small amounts of wildflowers - one or two, just enough to be able to study their scents for inspiration. and also just because they look pretty. however, every time they die out, it saddens him - he insists that it's alright, that the time they're still alive is worth it, but it's hard to miss that it reminds him of other things.
