"...from the stars we are born, and to the stars we shall return." — Arcane monk
━━━━━◇━━━━━
Altair was raised in the lower mountains of the Southern Icefield, where he was taught to value science and education above all else. His parents encouraged his scholarly pursuits in hopes he'd find a lofty position at the Observatory. While a chance to work in the Observatory enticed Altair, it was the higher reaches of the mountain cliffs that called to him. How clear the skies would be at such a height! And, oh! What he would give to see the northern lights up close! Steeling his resolve, Altair packed up his telescope and scrolls. His parents were quick to voice their displeasure, but Altair ignored their tears and threats. It was time to forge a path of his own making. |
The clear, unpolluted air of the Icefields produced a night sky full of stars more brilliant then Altair could have ever imagined. However, as he made his ascent up the Cloudscrape Crags, Altair failed to consider the danger he would face in pursuit of his studies. He'd always been quite stubborn in his endeavors, to the point of oftentimes putting his health and safety at risk. It wasn't until he'd run out of rations and realized he was terribly lost that a feeling of unease settled in his stomach. As the sun sank below the horizon, Altair gathered together a pile of dry timber and started a blazing fire. He hoped the beacon of light would alert local dragons to his location, and not murderous thieves or hungry beasts. It was a calculated risk that paid off. A rugged Guardian came upon the roaring fire. She shouldered heavy bags of scavenged artifacts and treasure she was bringing back to her clan. Though her destination was miles further up the mountain, Altair accepted her invention to join her on her trek back to the clan of Petrified Winds. The clan regarded Altair with great curiosity; Coatls were a rare breed among their community. Upon hearing the story of his journey, they offered him refuge and a place to continue his studies, so long as he provided a service for his stay. Altair's brilliance with numbers earned him a secure position in the clan as their treasurer. He took on this role with great diligence, knowing it would serve him well to stay on the clan leader's good side. Though on cold, dark nights in his office, his eyes would inevitably drift towards the window where a night sky full of stars still awaited him. |

As the years slipped past, Altair became a permanent fixture in the clan. However, he still had a difficult time connecting with the brutish nature of the other clan members. He favored intelligence, grace, and formality...all traits he would later see in the exiled nature noble, Melinoe. Altair was immediately charmed by the Wildclaw and he was quick to pursue her romantic affection. At her doorstep he left poems and wine, chocolate, aged cheese, silver hand mirrors and lockets. He invited her to stargazing sessions and was delighted to discover she already had a strong grasp on the the names of constellations and planets. They spoke at length of the stars and philosophy, of art and literature, and science. They found solace in each other and soon, companionship. He now treasures her company more than all the gold in Sornieth. |
During his time in the clan, Altair has become close friends with the scavenger, Meliglossos, who often brings to him an assortment of exotic artifacts for assessment. Among the many items, Altair picked out an extravagant wine glass for himself, admiring the gleaming crystal goblet and decorative stem. That night Altair planned to treat himself to a fine wine paired with a lavish raspberry cheesecake. However, when he began to fill the glass, he was astonished when the object--or rather, creature--leaped up and twirled across the table, sloshing wine in its wake. Begrudgingly, Altair now keeps the mimic on the shelf behind a glass display. It at least serves as a great conversation starter. Since obtaining his first mimic, Altair has become a bit obsessed with collecting rare and unique familiars... |
