Ilyas is the main healer of the Snowsquall Outpost. He travels around the tundra to visit clans in need of his expertise.
- History
Ilyas hatched in a seaside clan that made their lair in the cliffs. The clan secluded itself from dragon society, living on seafood and kelp from the bay and being fairly self sufficient. Their community was close knit but also had a strict hierarchy in which the older pearlcatchers layed down the law and other breeds came second to any pearlcatcher.
Ilyas was born of a family in good standing with the elders. He was privileged in many ways, but even he noticed and bumped into their restrictive ways. He grew up learning that the elders' word was truth, as they alone spoke to the Lightweaver and knew her desires. Never mind that they seemed to allow themself or their favoured clan members exemption from the rules whenever it suited them. Ilyas learned quickly not to question this, but he never accepted it either. His life became twofold: there was the clan-life of doing his chores, tending to the older dragons, foraging and attending the daily ceremonies; then there was his inner life, in which he noticed and analysed everything around him such as the way one of the Elders shifted when he talked about the visions the Lightweaver had sent him, or a young skydancer's slight flinch as Ilyas' own mother raised a claw to bless her in passing. The wrongness of it all only really hit him after he left.
Ilyas knew to keep his interests to himself. He was not all that interested in the clerical role his parents served in the clan, but he said all the right words and made the right signs at the ceremonies, so nobody suspected him. But the young pearlcatcher ran into a problem: his pearl was starting to deviate. Now the elders judged the pearls of each dragon that had one every few months, noting its size, weight, iridescence and colour. Certain qualities were favoured and seen as signs of good character and healthy thoughts, while others were deemed evil. While pearlcatchers were thought superior to other dragons, the ones with aberrant pearls were cast right down to the bottom. Ilyas became deathly afraid that his pearl outed him as a dissident and stopped growing it altogether. The elders noticed its limited size, however, and called Ilyas to them for a private conversation. At first they were gentle, showing concern and asking him about his well-being. The second time his pearl was judged, their patience was thin. Ilyas ended up being interrogated about his thoughts and choices for hours, during which he struggled not to cough up the discoloured bile that would give his true thoughts away.
That evening Ilyas knew he couldn't maintain the ruse any longer. Exhausted from the time spent with the elders, he retreated to his den with his pearl and let it all out. All the fear and stress of the day manifested as a drab coloured sludge that dried into a matte layer of nacre, covering his pearl. It definitely looked off compared to the shiny pearls his clanmates proudly carried around. He wanted to run before anyone would see, but he was too tired to move and drifted off into a deep sleep.

- Relationships
Chargestone - Ilyas helped her get back on her feet after she'd been freed from her icy prison. He's not a technician but he's gone out of his way to learn about lightning technology so that he can better tend to Chargestone's needs.
Gorana - collaborates with her more often than he'd like. Healing and death go hand in hand.
- Personality
While Ilyas appears an anxious, fidgety guy when interacting with others, his attitude becomes all serious and focused when he's at work. Ilyas rarely uses magic to heal, prefering to treat his patients with physical means. This is in part due to his subpar magical abilities, but also because he’s distrustful of the effect of so much magic on a dragon’s body. It’s easy to make mistakes or be sloppy when you can’t directly see what you’re doing.
Even though sickness, injury and all the unpleasant things that come with those don’t faze him in the slightest, the pearlcatcher is a neat freak who can’t abide dirt in his vicinity. He’s adamant on keeping his environment sterile, whether it’s his workspace or living quarters.
Ilyas originates from the Sunbeam Ruins, but from where exactly he's never told. He's not all that talkative, especially for a pearlcatcher, preferring quiet contemplation to gossip. He hides a deep sadness from his friends and patients.
- Abilities
Ilyas' medical skill is very high and dragons from all along the coast travel to the Outpost to see him. He uses his light magic to find his way in the dark or in bad weather, but doesn't seem to do much else with it. He's not a fighter and refuses to get involved in combat, even when threatened. As many lives as Ilyas saves, he seems to care little about his own health and pushes himself to extremes with little thought.
