____Once upon a time, a sweet little mirror was born to two ruthless mirror parents, and a ruthless clutch of mirror siblings. Females were rarely seen around those parts, as most of the youths born into the clan hatched from stolen eggs. The eggs had to be purebred mirror eggs, as the purity of the clan depended on that. The philosophy among his family was, emotions are for the weak. As such, the only emotions he saw were anger, hunger, and aggression.
____Oddly enough, despite the lack of compassion and tenderness that he had felt as he grew up, Lothair came to be an incredibly empathetic and caring dragon. In the beginning, he was very inclined to express these traits. The pack’s natural response to the traits was intense, cruel bullying. The only memory that Lothair has of approaching the elders in search for protection, was a loud;
“HEY GUYS! The little chicklet over here wants us to give him some hugs! Come and hug him… with your teeth!!”
Followed by the most painful beating that he had received in his short life.
____It did not take long for Lothair to reach his breaking point, because although he was sweet and gentle, the harassment that he was receiving was enough to bring out the beast in any living creature. He woke up to one of his brothers trying to pull out his teeth as he slept, and in a fit of rage, attacked the perpetrator. He snapped down his fangs and didn’t let go of his brother’s claw, as he writhed and wiggled and lashed his tail about in sheer pain. The other mirrors gathered around to witness the commotion, but nobody intervened. One of the elders arrived. Then another. They watched on, with a keen sparkle in their eyes.
____Blinded by a childhood of accumulated rage, Lothair engaged his opponent in a furious, bloody battle of claws and teeth. His brother, caught completely off guard, could do nothing but submit to Lothair’s attacks. As he laid, limp on the floor, Lothair continued. The crowd around them grew, silent, yet smiling. As quickly as Lothair had snapped into his rage, he snapped back out of it, and stood over his brother in a daze.
“Is… is he dead??”
No response. The atmosphere hung heavy around them. The crumpled mess of a dragon on the floor writhed around. He groaned.
“Good… Job…”
____As Lothair scoured the faces of the elders in his audience, he felt a rush that he had never felt before. For the first time, he felt… accepted. With his heart still pounding in his chest, he came to the decision that this was how he wanted to feel all the time. From that moment onward, everything changed.

____All the feelings of tenderness and love that Lothair had expressed in the past got pushed deep, deep down. He became fierce, confident. He continued to engage in brutal battles with his peers, towering above them with might. His social ranking skyrocketed, as he soon became favored by the elders and respected by his brothers. Yet, deep down, he still continued to be Lothair.
____When his packmates made a nasty remark about him, he still felt his stomach twist into a million knots. Even if his face did not show it. When he was engaged in battle with a brother, his only wish was to be anywhere but there. At night, when he was alone, the mirror shed bitter tears over his fallen packmates. Even those who had been the most cruel to him, he loved and missed deeply.
____Day came, when it was time to choose a new alpha. The two most likely candidates were Lothair, and his brother Carrius. Both Lothair and Carrius were skilled fighters, and fiercely loyal to their clan. Following the traditional method for resolving conflicts, the two brothers decided to battle it out.
____Initially, the whole clan had gathered to witness the battle of the clan’s two most fearsome warriors. For many hours, the two dragons clashed and collided. As time passed, the number of spectators dwindled. Lothair and Carrius did not notice, for their whole world at that moment was their opponents. They took off, chased each other, tried to bite at throats, eyes, and stomachs, crashed to the ground, and continued to claw at each other…
____The following morning, just as the sun was rising, Lothair claimed victory over his opponent. Slowly, the members of the clan gathered around Lothair to celebrate his victory and his ascension. He stood proud. But as new alpha, he could not bear to see new hatchlings be put down just because they weren't born bloodthirsty, like himself. He decided that, now that he was alpha, changes needed to be made. And so they were.

____Whenever Lothair saw a gentler dragon being bullied, he would intercept. Eventually, the clan members begrudgingly accepted this new style of ruling and began to treat each other more gently. Weeks passed. One day, the clan alpha returned from scavenging cradling a dragon egg. Since he had been alpha, he hadn’t permitted any other eggs to be stolen, so this came as a great surprise to the clan. It turns out, the egg had been abandoned and Lothair had taken pity on it. Very few mirrors in the clan approved, especially the fellow elders, as they had no way to test the purity of the mirror that grew within the egg, but what could they do against the clan alpha?
____To everybody’s disgust, the creature that eventually emerged from the nest wasn’t a mirror. It was a skydancer. Yet, nobody dared contradict Lothair’s decree. The baby was christened with the name of Dorcas, and adopted and trained by Lothair as his personal protege. The clan grew resentful.
____One day Lothair’s pack was on the move, looking for food and shelter. All was going well, until they were ambushed by Talonik warriors. Retaining their fierce battle style, the clan maintained the upper hand in battle. As the battle raged on, Lothair spotted something out of the corner of his eye. Dorcas, bloodied and weak, his legs shaking, trying their best to support his body. Lothair took but a blink to be towering over Dorcas, taking the finishing blow that was meant for his protege. He fell.
____IImmediately, a loud boom somewhere in the abiding Boneyard Marked the end of the battle, and the Talonik fled.
____Lothair laid on the floor, his eyelids drooping, and he saw the faces of his packmates who had gathered around their alpha. Although blurry, the looks on their faces expressed an old, familiar emotion. Disgust. Disappointment…. Happiness?? His last conscious memory was seeing his pack walk away, dragging Dorcas behind them as the skydancer called in with all of his last remaining strength. Lothair fell unconscious, feeling a cold tear slide down his face.
