Dragon Log

Born to a pair of dragons who many of the Clan thought would never get together, he has long been anticipated by his father…and is proving an extraordinary—and perhaps problematical—additon to the Clan. Like his sisters, he was born already knowing his name, and also like his sisters, the only male dragon of this unique foursome appears to have a personality—and a magic—that fits that name perfectly. From his fascination with bright colors (and even brighter fires), to his love of nature, to his interest in all the mated dragons of the Clan, Beltane is, without a doubt, a dragon focused on fertility and nature. Only time will tell how this will affect him, and the Clan, as he grows….

7-16-18: Almost as soon as he was born, Beltane’s magic has been apparent—and troublesome: A brush with Spellweaver and Runemaster caused the long-established platonic mates to suddenly become quite amorous…A meeting with Abracadabra has led to the usually reserved Skydancer seeking out her mate Lumos for an early—very early—night….Duskshadow and Moondust have found themselves contemplating the prospect of a new hatchling or two…and Oberon had to be literally sat on by Titania to stop him from wandering.

And this is when Beltane’s magic is new, and relatively weak….

7-18-18: Much to the Clan’s relief, Beltane does, in fact, appear to have limits to his magic. Like all hatchlings, he sleeps much of the time, and when he does, he is not influencing anyone to do anything. Equally important, his power appears to be growing steadily weaker by the day. The mages of the Clan have tested him—as much as a hatchling can be tested—and have determined that Beltane’s magic appears to be cyclical in nature, waxing and waning with the seasons.

Fortunately, he is in his “waning” phase at the moment, and by the speed at which his magic is decreasing, they estimate he will not begin to increase again for some time, and will not be at peak until the end of the Wavecrest Saturnalia. Unfortunately, the “peak” for his magical influence will likely be much, much stronger than what the Clan has been dealing with now, and it is unlikely that any dragons who encounter Beltane during that time will be able to resist the urge to mate—whether they wish to do so or not.

There is, however, hope for the Clan’s avoidance of a sudden hatchling boom around the start of May: Nightsedge has observed that when Samhain is near her brother, Beltane appears to have no magic at all, period. Neither, interestingly enough, does Samhain…

10-21-18: Hawthorne, the Barkskin Watcher, has Awakened! Beltane is extremely happy for his friend. Hawthorne herself does not seem to have changed that much, except for an increased desire to flirt with all the male species in the Clan, familiar and dragon alike. Perhaps she is being influenced by Beltane's magic? Or perhaps she is simply a flirt by nature. Either way, it is making for an interesting time in the caves....

2-9-19: While in the midst of a squabble with Samhain over which cave they should live in—Beltane wishes to be inside his Charge, the Mating Caves, while Samhain is determined to stay in the Manipulated Magics Caves, claiming that those are her Charge—the young “matchmaker” dragon discovered how to control his fluctuating “Gift.” Apparently, all he has to do is concentrate, and he can turn it off…or on. While the Clan is somewhat relieved that Beltane has found a way to ensure that they will not all end up expecting hatchlings, Duskshadow is concerned about the implications of a Gift that can be turned on at will, as well as off…Especially since the firmly declared bachelorette Samhain has now inexplicably mated with another dragon and produced three eggs, thus requiring her to head into the Mating and Nursery Caves at least until the eggs have hatched—which is exactly where Beltane wanted her to go. And this is during a time that Beltane’s Gift should still be relatively weak…

6-7-19: Lately a tide of magical energy has been sweeping the Clan, causing quite a few magic auras to appear in the visible spectrum, on both dragons who were expecting it, and those who were not. It came as no surprise to anyone in the Clan that Beltane's magic should suddenly manifest as a visible Gladegift Halo and an equally suddenly swirling of Spring's Breath...though some are wondering why this did not happen closer to his peak time for his magic. Beltane himself is quite proud of his new "adornment," and has chosen to celebrate the appearance of the Nature Halo and the drifting flowers by raiding the Apparel area of the Hoard for something to complement his “look”. He is now wearing some Galdegift Garlands as well, much to the chagrin of the Clan Mother, as Duskshadow is not a little afraid that the "Fertility Dragon" might be able to channel his magic into the motes that are constantly drifting off of those garlands throughout the lair...

8-31-19: Beltane decided to join his three sisters on a journey to the Ashfall Waste for the Flameforger’s Festival, in honor of the idea of a “Fire Harvest.” He had an unexpected windfall there, when he found himself inside a tent with a very unique Forge, which was, of all things, sprouting fire seeds… ( , )

…A quick chat with Samhain later, and Beltane was able to try for his own collection of Fire Seeds and Flowers. His resultant bottles have not yet been shipped to the caves, but he is waiting eagerly for their arrival, while the Clan tries to figure out if this new fascination with sprouting fire plants is better or worse than his Gift for encouraging hatchling births. At least his new gauntlets should come in handy to protect his claws from any unexpected “sproutings.” ( ) If only there were enough of this new armor to protect the rest of the Clan, too…

12-1-19: Beltane’s bottles and gauntlets arrived today! He is ecstatic at how well they look in his cave, and it really looks like he might just spend all day rearranging them to get them just right…

…And in the meantime, there was a pleasant surprise in the delivery today: Beltane had completely forgotten about the Daily Draw during the Ember Toss Game, and so was stunned to see the “Blacksmith Set” Saturday Prize in the package that arrived. It seems that he and Samhain won a prize they didn’t even realize that they had won! ( ) While most of the set does not really interest Beltane, he has none-the-less claimed 5 out of the 7 pieces, including the Ornate Copper Necklace and Ornate Copper Bracelets, both of which he is now wearing. These, however, are not just ornamentation for him. He has discovered that the green gem set within them is just perfect for channeling his fertility magic, and also, far more importantly as far as the Clan is concerned, for controlling it. Perhaps, now, the Clan Mother will allow him to wander away from his sister a little more often…

3-22-22: Beltane's control of his power is growing by leaps and bounds, and Duskshadow has agreed that he and his sister no longer need to be joined at the hip--at least not in the Spring, when Beltane's magic is ascendant. There are still some problems in the Fall, as Samhain does not seem to wish to control herself at all, but at least Beltane does not need to see his sister every single day. This is especially important at the moment, as the young Guardian has just acquired a long-anticipated addition to his family: The Spring Sphinx has initiated a familiar bond at last! Despite wandering over almost 2 days after Spring's official start, "Verna," as she calls herself, appears to be determined to make up for lost time, and is already extremely Tolerant of her chosen dragon. If her interest and Beltane's magic continue to grow, the young Sphinx will be fully Awakened in no time...

6-13-22: Verna has Awakened at last! Beltane was a little worried when it appeared that his friend's bond had stalled slightly, but the delay does not seem to have affected the Spring Sphinx negatively at all. If anything, the bond is even stronger than normal for a newly Awakened familiar. Though that could have something to do with the way that her magic and Beltane's power have been intertwining. Hopefully this will not have any long-term consequences for the rest of the Clan. One unexpected hatchling season was more than enough....
