One of the First Five, Koi was also one of the co-captains of Traveler's Rest's scavenger group, the Retrievers, whose job was to go out into the desert and bring back resources for the clan, and also direct travelers its way. Nowadays, Koi takes care of most of the administrative work for the Rest, making sure reports are filed correctly and materials are taken to the correct location. She also helps lead the clan as one of the First Five, alongside her mate Jade. Koi first met Hurricane as a hatchling in the Everbloom Gardens. The Imperial's stories of faraway lands fascinated the young Koi, and she begged the Traveler to bring her with when she left. Hurricane refused, saying she was still too young, but left Koi an intracite map of Sornieth, so she could find her way to the Rest when she was strong enough to make the journey. The moment Koi's wings could carry her, she took off, flying south from her homeland and into the desert. Mael and Belinda welcomed her with open wings, and Koi immediately settled into the work of setting up the clan. A few weeks after Koi, an energetic Spiral arrived at the camp: Jade. Jade instantly took a liking to Koi, who was less than enthused about the Spiral following her around. Jade's constant movements knocked over Koi's carefully stacked materials, and her constant chatter made it hard for Koi to concentrate. Eventually, Koi pulled Jade aside and explained to the Spiral that her constant attention was making it hard for Koi to do her job. Jade apologized, explaining that she wanted to help, but didn't know how. Koi was surprised, and agreed to teach Jade. The two began going out on scavenging missions together, becoming friends, and then mates. One day, on a solo mission, Koi came across a ruined nest with three Ridgeback hatchlings in it. She couldn't just leave them, so she took them back to the clan, where Jade was waiting with another lost hatchling, a Spiral. The four hatchlings were promptly adopted by Koi and Jade, and grew up to become prominent members of the clan. Koi doesn't do much fieldwork nowadays, but still enjoys a long desert flight with her family. |
