Strategist - Prisoner brilliant ⟐ realistic ⟐ disgraced |
A longtime member of the Exultant Order, Alezan was once its foremost military strategist, organizing raids and leading battles to expand the Order's territory and influence. For a time, she was a favorite of Orchid's, the shaman appreciating her for her efficacy and wisdom. However, that wisdom would eventually come with a price. As the Order's territory continued to grow, Alezan became concerned with the sustainability of their strategy. With its strict standards for who is considered worthy of life, the Order did not boast a huge population to match its ever-accelerating expansion. Orchid dismissed Alezan's fears by insisting that large portions of the Order's territory were maintained and guarded by subservient clans, but Alezan continued to argue, pointing out that many of those clans only obeyed the Order out of fear. If the Order expanded to the point of weakness, there would be nothing holding them in line. These clashes between her and Orchid grew more and more heated, forming a deep rift between the two dragons. Things came to a head when, during a particularly heated argument, Alezan challenged Orchid's role as shaman by questioning why the Ones Apart would allow the Order to be led by such a short-sighted leader. Interpreting the insult as a threat of a coup, Orchid declared that Alezan's lack of faith had led her to treason. Alezan was consequently imprisoned, with her place as the Order's chief strategist passed on to her once-subordinate, Idora. For a time afterward, Alezan resided in the Order's dungeons, living in disgrace. Her replacement Idora still sought her counsel from time-to-time, trading food and comforts for pieces of her strategic wisdom. Alezan was resigned to this ignoble fate for some time, before she was introduced to a peculiar cellmate. A Pearlcatcher who had been caught attempting to pass through the Order's territory, the stranger was placed temporarily in Alezan's cell after another prisoner made an attempt on his life in the main dungeons. Knowing Alezan was of generally calm temperament, the jailer Query had the Pearlcatcher assigned to her cell until matters had settled. Alezan conversed eagerly with her new cellmate, keen for company other than her captors. Their time together was a spark of hope amidst her otherwise bleak circumstances. However, it was not to last. The Pearlcatcher was declared inauspicious by Orchid and thus condemned to "Sending"–a euphemism for the Order's practice of wanton execution. It was the final indignation that at last broke through Alezan's haze of resignation. Now determined to save both herself and her new companion, Alezan hatched a plot to escape. Knowing from Idora that the Order was currently involved in a skirmish with a hostile Plague clan, she advised the War Chief that their enemies' strength lay in their territory's soil. This soil, Alezan claimed, had healing properties that not only accelerated their wounded's recovery but also imbued them with enhanced strength. Believing her, Idora advised her troops to rub the soil on their own wounds as well. The results were disastrous. Every dragon who followed her advice contracted terrible infections from the plague-ridden soil and many died. Enraged, Idora broke into Alezan's cell in the dead of night, intending to kill her for her betrayal, but Alezan and her companion overpowered her and escaped. She and the Pearlcatcher fled the Order's territory, settling just long enough to hatch a nest before deciding it would be safer for all involved to part ways. Alezan took their only daughter and continued her flight out of the Order's territory, never to see the Pearlcatcher again.
