Biography
"I saw light at the crossroad, just around dusk. I thought maybe it was a caravan that was resting before the Citadel, or maybe a lost prospector. I went down, hoping to convince them they were safer at the Inn..."
"What was it? ... Gentian, what did you see?"
"I don't ... I don't know. It was big. Against the stars, it looked like an imperial - big like that, you know? But when it moved, it shifted, and light came through where skin should be... It spoke slowly, a deep voice, but slow like glaciers rubbing together. It kept saying it was cold. At first I thought it was a dragon, so I said we have a fire at the Inn where it could warm up. But it didn't seem to hear me."
"Sacred bones, you didn't welcome it, did you?"
"We have a sign, Bier. I don't know if you read it? It would make no difference to most things if I spoke the words aloud."
"We should tell the Citadel."
"It's not hurting anyone! Leave it alone, it's just frightening. Let your Hunters do what they will among the tombs and catacombs. Here, on the road? We have to look out for each other - living and dead. If you're itching to get something done, maybe find its body and give it peace."
"Until then?"
"I guess we just give night time directions and say 'turn left at the frigid imperial spectre.'"
"Are you looking for it? For pity's sake, go offer it a room if you're worried!"
"I just wonder why it chose this crossroads, so deep in the desert as we are. Tomorrow, maybe, I'll ask its name."
