BLOODSTONE
corrupted sorcerer | he/him

ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Bloodstone's tower is not easily accessible, and for good reason. It sits high in a thorny nest of barren, wind-scoured peaks, a foreboding needle into the clouds that is several day's trek from just about everything. It was built by a powerful sorcerer, one who wished his inner sanctum to be remote enough that he could conduct his arcane practice far from prying eyes. This deep into the highlands, even the loudest screams of pain don't carry far enough for help to come running.

Like many of his contemporaries, Bloodstone is fascinated by the nature of the draconic soul. What makes it such a powerful magnet for elemental magics? Where does it reside in the body? What other planes of existence is it capable of venturing into, beyond life and death? However, unlike most sorcerers, Bloodstone doesn't care much about the consequences of pursuing these questions to their limits. He has always had a reputation for being careless with his magic, and for lacking reservations when it comes to the use of dangerous and violent magic. This in itself isn't very remarkable, as it's not uncommon for magic-wielders to take their art too far and end up hurting themselves or others. These dragons typically get the end they deserve sooner or later, but Bloodstone is far too cautious and meticulous to be caught in the act of meddling with things nobody has business meddling with.

One of Bloodstone's most effective safeguards is that he never experiments on himself or puts himself in harm's way, even if it means suspending his research. He knows how dangerous it is to attempt to separate a soul from its body while keeping both alive and intact. But as fortune would have it, there is never a shortage of young, misguided dragons who are seeking to make a living through the arcane arts. And Bloodstone, unfortunately, is very good at finding these bright-eyed, curious, and incredibly ignorant youths.

Over the years, he has lured many a would-be apprentice to his tower, promising to teach them the secrets of the universe, to give them a vital role in his illustrious research. He's quite a smooth-talker, and has the wealth and talent to pull the wool over all but the most observant eyes. His tower is situated in the center of a deep crater lake, which has become impassable with layers of defensive magic- except by a narrow drawbridge to the tower's gates. Once this bridge is raised, Bloodstone's apprentices quickly realize that they have become prey: trapped in a labyrinth of their predator's own design.

Many do not survive Bloodstone's sadistic experiments, but those that do are perhaps less fortunate. When their lives are all used up and their purpose is served, the survivors are left traumatized, mutilated, and often deeply cursed, then dumped on the mountainside to waste away. Bloodstone got away with this wickedness for far too long, becoming arrogant and prideful. He believed himself invincible, but only because he failed to keep tabs on the small handful of his apprentices who managed to escape with their lives and regroup in a village further down the mountain.

Vengeance is a powerful driving force, and with numbers on their side, Bloodstone's victims realized that between them, they had learned enough of the old man's secrets to ruin him. Nobody should suffer the fate they have, so they devised a plan to keep Bloodstone from ever hurting another innocent. They spent years learning the most powerful binding enchantments, as well as mirroring magic and subversive spells. When they struck the tower, it was a precise and impeccably organized operation. One team snuck inside, undoing the tower's defenses and mirroring them so that once reactivated, they would attack anything that attempted to leave the tower, rather than anything that tried to get in. Another team flooded Bloodstone's chambers with sleeping gas, and while he was unconscious, shackled his wings to a runed collar strong enough to bind a god and layered with enchantments to trap the wearer within the tower by its own magic. On their way out, the victorious apprentices destroyed the drawbridge, making the tower only accessible by flight.

It didn't take Bloodstone long to realize what had happened once he came to. In a blind rage, he paced the tower, looking for a way out. He couldn't break the shackles that held his wings, stripping him of flight, and he couldn't fight his way past his own guards who had turned against him, for the collar had severed his connection to his magic- just as he had attempted to sever his apprentice's magical bonds to their souls. The irony was not lost on him. In a desperate bid for freedom, Bloodstone jumped from a window to attempt to swim free of his sanctuary-turned-prison, only to find that the collar's metal reacted caustically to water, and that he would boil alive long before reaching shore.

Defeated, Bloodstone can do little but pace his workshop, unchanging and undying, plotting revenge that he can't enact unless he finds someone willing to release him from his chains. He studies the dark arts ceaselessly, with manic determination, but without his magic, it's just knowledge, useless tomes accumulating in every dark corner of his tower, now silent save for his bitter mutterings and frustrated howls, which echo through the mountains too far from civilization for anyone to hear.
