Clan Mavenlark’s second leader following the Grandmother, Bitestrith came to Clan Mavenlark the way that most dragons do - as a refugee. Unfortunate enough herself to live in the border between the Starfall Isles and the Scarred Wasteland, as many destitute and indebted dergs do, Bitestrith’s early life was set against a background of back-breaking servitude within crystal quarries, where class was merely designated by whom was holding a whip against the back of whom. Orphaned as an egg, she had been hatched within the quarry, raised by a team of quarry-workers - it takes a village, after all - and was set to work as soon as her claws could manage a pick-axe. Her family was comprised of her fellow workers, and they were all she knew for the first several years of her life. This work, as she was told by the quarry owners, was payment for them allowing her to stay there. The scowls on their faces and their grip on their flogs discouraged her from asking if she would be free to go if she no longer needed a place to stay. At nights, her fellow dragons, almost all much more advanced than her in age, would sing songs of the free world that waited beyond their tools. They sounded too good to be true.

The border of Arcane and Plague is a dangerous one for any derg to live in, no matter their age. When sickness and magic fight to outdo the other in fantastic displays of adaptation, innocent dragons are often drawn into the mix. Bitestrith was no exception. Within the span of one day, this fae woke up with a fever that could have boiled a pot of water. The next, great pustules had settled around her eyes, stealing a great deal of her sight in the process. It never returned.

Fearing the spread of the disease to other workers, the quarry owners were quick to give Bitestrith the boot, setting her off anywhere into the world that wasn’t their business. Mostly blindly, she stumbled upwards further into the Arcanist’s realm. Fortunately, scouts from a nearby clan had seen her struggling her way through the spires of the Crystalspine Reaches, and offered her temporary shelter at their clan: Mavenlark. She was too weak to refuse, as the fever had returned - but every inch of her blood balked at the suggestion. Knowing nothing of the clan, she feared that she would again be put to work, robbed of the opportunity to see if the songs of her old family held any truth to them.

Yet as they say, the rest is history. Mavenlark’s refugee camp - or what the derg could make of it with her limited eyesight, anyhow - was home to all manners of brightly colored and smart dragons, most of whom took an immediate liking to the young dragon. Many offered her free food and drink, and permanent clan members visiting the camp were happy to add onto their offers with baked goods and foraging scores of their own. Bitestrith heard all manners of stories from dragons across the globe in just a single night that she swore she could feel her brain swelling under the weight of it all. When it became clear that the clan did not expect any service from her for the price of her stay, she thrust herself upon them anyway - and her pure enthusiasm for the maintenance of the clan well into her adulthood made her the perfect candidate for the clan’s second leader following the Grandmother’s death.

...but this is more of her history than any average derg would know, even within clan Mavenlark. Bitestrith - now referred to by her clan as “Mother Bitestrith”, or simply “the Mother” - talks very little of her own past, focusing mainly on the needs of Mavenlark’s refugee and artisan communities, both of which are very demanding in their own rights. Her leadership is a symbol of clan Mavenlark, but she is also responsible for the Central Parlor, a subsection of Mavenlark. As one can imagine, she is frequently busy, and can been seen flitting to and from all corners of the massive crystal spire Mavenlark is housed in, often accompanied by secretary, loyal companion, and lover Ming (though, that last title is bit of a secret - you didn’t hear it from anyone reputable, that much is for sure). In the eyes of the public, Ark is her mate for all intents and purposes, whom she also loves deeply. It’s a good thing the three of them get along together so well...none of them are hiding the fact that they’re in a polyamarous relationship, but none of them are exactly open about their personal lives, either. Asking any one of them about their relationships will only yield you a blank stare and a reiteration of whatever was previously said in the conversation. It's all about the betterment of Mavenlark for those three - unless they all happen to be alone.

She never removes the mask that she wears in the presence of others but has been known to switch it out for special occasions and ceremonies. Something about the "self being its own prison", or something. But most likely a ploy to hide her severely scarred eyes - she's a bit sensitive about them. As an additional precaution, they are covered with arcane-colored contacts. The glasses are decoy.
