Biography
Svea | the ceramacist
xxxxx |
Svea's love affair with the pottery wheel first sprang from a place of some personal pain, growing tendrils and roots from love and patience. Her adolescent gangliness paired with her dull coloration quickly made her the target of bullying among her birthclan’s hatchlings. With the typical lack of creativity but nonetheless meanspiritedness experienced by most young bullies, they had taken to calling her “wet clay” because of her coloring, shoving their talons into her to “see if they could leave any marks”. They might not have been poets, but there were vicious - and their words stung the young Svea. While her siblings had developed their own trademark comebacks to the bullying - whether with meaner wordplay or a set of claws to the attacker’s face - she herself was lacking one. Resorting to fighting seemed too animalistic - and often got her siblings scolded - but firing back insults wasn’t exactly her forte either. Anxiousness grew in her chest at the mere sight of her bullies, even if they weren’t interest in raising their claws at her on that particular day. Her father, always a believer in using pain to one’s advantage due to a rather thankless upbringing, encouraged her to pick up pottery as a hobby. “That way,” he said, half-joking and half-serious, “if they call you that again, you can say ‘thanks for noticing, I spent all day in the studio!’” It wasn’t exactly the most straightforward of ways to face her bullies, but Svea took her father’s advice nonetheless. She took a liking to it immediately. It soothed her anxiety that if she made any mistakes on the wheel, they could be corrected easily by simply pounding the clay back and trying again. A simple hobby turned into a career, and now, Svea has the pleasure of owning her own kiln within her den, which also doubles as her storefront. Pottery a-plenty lines the inside of her dwelling - now that she no longer lives in the Earthshaker’s realm, she no longer worries about them being knocked over by earthquakes, which is a massive salve to her anxiety - but almost all of it is for sale. She doesn’t believe in keeping any of her pottery-ware, which ranges from plates, vases, and den decorations, as she thinks it should serve some sort of purpose other than sitting around looking pretty. Many of her creations are utilitarian in nature, with multiple functions - a planter, for example, might contain a mechanism that automatically waters its contents. The heat of her kiln emanates from her den deep into the evening, coating the clan in a comfortable ember glow.
