Ragepuff Down
Owlcat Journal

From early on in his life, Baz was terrible at magic. All he tried seemed to fail miserably, and yet his failures did little but to inspire harder work. Though day in and day out he worked, until a week of efforts were spent just to learn a single, simple spell. With some help from Junmin, his weeks turned into days, and the young dragon started to go from struggling to thriving, during which period Dapple became Baz's new tutor. Due to Dapple and Junmin's help, Baz slowly mastered the arcane arts, becoming one of the best mages in the clan.

After his spellbook was full to the brim with methodology and corrections, Dapple announced his intent to leave his position as tutor, offering it to Baz, his hand-picked replacement. Remembering his own struggles and the cruel words of others about those struggles, Baz was keen to help others, and keener yet to accept the position. Now, Baz spends his time teaching the magic he once struggled with (though at times he asks Junmin's help to teach more advanced works), and oftentimes creates new spells altogether to impress his friends.

Baz had always thought he had been destined for greatness. During the annual hatchling career ceremony, the item he had picked from the towering pile that was Crim’s stash was called useless. The elder’s exact words upon seeing his choice were:
“A down feather. The fledging of a baby bird who is more useful than you will ever be.”
The elder had left the clan soon after. The next dragon deemed elder was Dapple. He told Baz something different.
“You picked a feather from a baby bird. At the time that the feather was shed, the bird was still flightless, but it does not mean it would never fly; much like how you may not serve a specific purpose now, but you will. I see that you will go to new heights for this clan.”
He had then gone on to ask him to register magic as an elective.
“I see it in you and the way your scales glow,” he had said to him, “you are destined to be a great mage.”
Under Dapple’s firm tutelage, Baz flourished. For his thirteenth moon, right before the pubescent picking, Dapple gifted him a cloak.
“This is a Starlight Cloak,” he explained, “and I received it when I was your age. It amplifies your magic reserves and strengthens your spells. It reflects the skies and their will.”
Baz had engulfed him in an embrace.
“Thank you,” he murmured into his mentor’s chest, “this is the best gift I’ve ever gotten.”
A week later, the pubescent picking was upon them. Much like the career ceremony for hatchlings, the picking was a ceremony for teenaged dragons to pick items, this time from a more selective pile.
Baz had analysed each and every item in his pile; most of them were shiny and golden. Yet he felt attracted to the only shabby item in the lot. A well-worn book. While sure the other items were worth more than he could imagine, he sensed a strong arcane power emanating from the tome’s pages.
Gingerly picking it up, he smiled. The dust cleared from the cover to reveal a priceless symbol; that of the Arcanist, their god.
“This is- this- it’s an Arcane Tome.” He managed.
Dapple nodded. “Yes, it is,” he said, “and it means you will be a great mage one day.”
Baz stretched out a tendril of magic to lightly tickle his mentor. “Stop it,” he replied, smirking, “my head will get too big for even magic to carry.”
The elder chuckled, patting Baz on the head.
Barely a few moons later, Baz was now one of the most proficient mages in the entire clan.
“Mage! Mage Baz!” A little Skydancer called. He was an unnamed wandering traveller, who would soon move on to his next home.
Baz gripped his tome tighter.
“Yes?” he replied.
“I know I’m going to be leaving soon,” the Skydancer smiled sheepishly, “but I think magic would be a useful skill to have. And your magic has improved significantly, so much that it’s now tangible. P-please teach me?”
In that moment, Baz saw himself in the child. A familiar eagerness shone from the ‘dancer’s eyes, filled with a desperation to learn. Baz sighed, and pink magic curled into the air, touching the Skydancer’s head carefully.
“Alright,” he said, smiling.
For on the child’s head was a symbol of Baz’s own growth. The mage stared at it, entranced at the way it nestled itself in the Skydancer’s fur.
“Y-you have something on your head,” he said. “Just there. A feather. A down feather. Wherever did you get that?”
