Effigy A beautiful, hollow trinket. When the visions began, they would store the residue within it as a memento...this is no longer necessary. It now overflows with shadowy ichor like its holder, clutched in childlike comfort as tears still flow. |

Whispered through the woods or passed around a gambling table, legends speak of a dragon who was given the gift of foresight by the Shadowbinder herself. Though they were only a hatchling, she granted their request; for whenever they cried, and they cried often, their tears would become a scrying pool, clear as crystal and as true as can be.
The goddess warned them, however, that the boon would be its own terrible price. Though the future is uncertain, much of it will always be full of tragedy; for every good and prosperous future you seek, it will be a drop in the ocean of inevitable doom. An endless parade of death and despair awaits us, she hissed, and if you are not careful with your sight, you will lose yourself to the dreadful possibilities. When the hatchling accepted the offer, they had hoped to use their predictions for the betterment of those around them. When they cried and scried, they attempted to seek friends and fortune - all they saw was desolation. A lethal plague from the Scarred Wasteland, a flood from the Sea of a Thousand Currents, an all-out invasion from the Lightweaver and her children. Faced with horrible visions, they continued to cry. They saw families, broken and lost, and so they wept. They saw the 11 gods fail to turn back the Shade, and so they mourned. They saw their own fate if they continued to gaze, and yet they could hold back their tears no more than they could turn back time. Their eyes were lost to the murky truth, and their futures faded to blessed silence. They are said to live deep underground, hidden where the moonlight never shines. Though the tears still flow freely, a thick shadow obscures the future. Although they are blinded, Styx is finally free of their curse. |
