intro blurb here

xxxThe first thing dragons notice when they approach the wooden structure October calls home is the smell. It changes every so often; in the summers, it smells of cedarwood, roses, lemon thyme and honeysuckle blooms; in the autumn, there is the aroma of cinnamon and apple cider and vanilla; in the winters, the comforting scent of a wood fire and rosemary and freshly baked bread. The shop itself is rather unassuming from the outside: like many of the buildings making up the Town Square, it’s rather quaint, a glorified log cabin with a wooden sign in cursive: Spices and Exotic Goods.
xxxThe inside of the shop, which doubles as her home, is, simply put, an assault on the senses. The smells of spices, herbs, and scented candles form an overpowering melange that has the clan divided on whether it makes for a pleasant experience or simply reeks. And for all her insistence upon the fact that she is a merchant, it looks like ‘hoarder’ might be a better term; the small candle-lit rooms are carpeted with intricate rugs, draped in beautiful but dust-filled curtains, lined with shelves upon shelves of rare antique books, and filled with wooden tables and chairs, which in turn are covered in pieces of silk from the Windswept Plateau, tiny animal statues, religious depictions of the Shadowbinder, jewelry, precious stones from every corner of Sornieth, a few ordinary pinecones, and, of course, glass jars of saffron, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, cardamom, sumac, and spices whose names many dragons don’t even recognize. (Frankly, the entire setup seems to be a massive fire hazard.) Possibly the strangest decorations in this hoard is her snail paraphernalia- a lot of it. She seems to have an odd obsession with the creatures: statues of snails, drawings of snails, books featuring snails, snail shells- if it’s snail-themed, she wants it, and the most frustrating aspect of this is that nobody knows why. She hates getting her claws dirty and absolutely refuses to touch a live snail, but she loves to look at them. Her shop assistant, a young dragon named Jude, sometimes shows them to her when she finds them in the garden.
xxxIt’s impossible to find anything specific on one’s own here, but October seems to have some system in all the chaos; she’ll find what you need quickly, assuming you can find her. Moving things around is a relatively reliable strategy to attract her attention, as she seems to have a sixth sense for when dragons don’t put things back where they ‘obviously belong’, though this is also a reliable strategy for pissing her off. October is a very kind-hearted dragon- at least, the rest of the clan promises- but she doesn’t seem to have any moral qualms against exaggerating the value of her wares and stretching the truth a little bit here and there to get an extra bit of profit, and a small shred of spite is often all it takes for her to jack up her prices by, say, ten percent, perhaps twenty, perhaps two hundred.
xxxOf course, all this is assuming October is even home, which is quite rare except for during the festivals. Business in Redfield is slow for most of the year, so rather than stay home, October prefers to travel, leaving her assistant Jude to organize the shelves and contend with the rare customer. She never stays for more than a week or two at a time, and sometimes jokes that she should’ve been born a wind dragon for all her wandering, but the truth is she can’t stand staying in the same place for too long. Her travels take her across all of Sornieth, and when she returns it is always with something valuable to add to her shop and a story to tell Jude. She stays for long enough to catch up with friends, celebrate the turn of the season, sell some wares, and then leaves before dawn.
xxxOctober doesn’t speak of her past much, and most know better than to ask. It’s common knowledge that while her childhood wasn’t terrible, she felt stifled by her family and home clan. She made the decision to fly away when she was quite young, only to find out she quite enjoyed flying, and she’s been doing that ever since. Despite her somewhat eccentric lifestyle, she’s since found peace here. She has a home and a business that rakes in enough money to support her love of the finer things in life, and out of all of Fernwood’s residents, she has probably met more dragons than anyone else. When she is here, her presence is celebrated by most; although she has a bit of a (somewhat justified) reputation for being a snob and an attention seeker, she’s also quite thoughtful and kind to Fernwood’s residents. She can often be found hanging around her friend Caltha’s bakery, and always brings her something shiny from her travels in exchange for a loaf of fresh-baked bread.

sells spices and herbs
single, aromantic, and lives happily with her cats
nobody really knows how many cats since a bunch of them are a mother and her kittens who all look nearly identical; it’s a local mystery among hatchlings. four nearly-identical brown tabby cats have been seen at the same time, along with one tuxedo, one tortoiseshell, and her familiar, a Velvet Floracat, so it is known that she has at least 7
collects smelly herbs and spices and scented candles so the clan is divided on whether her house/shop smells amazing or reeks
everyone is mystified by how her entire house hasn’t burned down yet what with how crowded with fabric it is, the fact that it’s made of wood, and the ridiculous amount of candles she always has lit
also collects nice carpets, silks, jewelry, shiny rocks, rare books, statues of deities.... she calls it “self-care”. not limited to expensive or valuable things though; many of her stuff is valuable, but that’s because she usually sells it for a profit. she’s weirdly obsessed with snails & collects anything snail-themed, and also has an impressive pinecone collection
a really nice person to her clanmates but doesn’t mind exaggerating the truth to customers from other clans if it earns her an extra bit of money
travels a lot, says she should’ve been born as a wind dragon
her shop/house is a damn mess and it’s almost impossible to find anything specific, but anyone who tries to rearrange anything WILL get smacked
will cry if she gets mud on her claws
not pretentious or unkind (actually a very thoughtful dragon) just a bit... peculiar and attention-hogging
can’t stand being in the same place for too long, travels a lot but usually comes back every few weeks
quite religiously devout to the Shadowbinder
nobody really knows much about her past and she prefers not to talk about it. all they know is that while it wasn’t terrible, she felt stifled during her childhood; after making the decision to leave her birth clan, she’s found peace here
