Biography

history

A sweet dragon whose happiness cynics sometimes mistake as naivity, Acropora is among the most well-travelled dragons of the clan. Years of adventuring have given her a wisdom around other dragons which has not hardened into something more morose. She is an excellent friend and confidant, who journeyed to Light after many years on the road. She has specialised in healing and helping dragons overcome past struggles and detrimental behaviors. While she hasn't been in the clan from its beginning, she is wise enough to guess, from the ruins, the ghosts and the newness of the buildings, that it has not always enjoyed its current state of prosperity.

She lives with her girlfriend, Jayfajel, in the heart of the clan. Acropora abhors gossip, and it's almost impossible to coax information out of her which she doesn't intend to reveal. She bears the typical Tundra tendency of forgetting faces, but remembering smells. She has an excellent memory for facts and emotions, however, and has been known to take advantage of her breeds underestimated nature.

Features and roles within Waterborne.

Food production:
Padparadscha - Plants. Specifically water-dwelling plants, as the Sea of a Thousand currents provides an easier home for flora than the Plaguebringer's homeland.
Elkurud - Produces a few really bad wines every year. The vines keep succumbing to pests, especially a nasty Plague variant of Phyllorexa. Fortunately, the grapevines are not his primary source of income, merely his primary source of consternation.

Defence:
Ven is responsible for patrolling the skies over Waterborne's territory. They are an excellent and hardy flier, and are the leader of this form of surveilling in the clan. Ven usually soars at too high an altitude to discern individual dragons, much less their activities.
Farohildis - part of Waterborne's defence. She is an experienced leader of search-and-rescue missions on Waterborne's territory. A hardy Snapper who uses Ice magic to ward off both water and plague.

Agritech:
Sala & Alnair are business partners in a venture to produce continuously disease-resistant plants. Sala first developed the idea when her clan dwelt in the Sunbeam Ruins but, among the pestilent conditions of the Plaguelands, the business is truly expanding. Sala and Alnair's business serves herbivorous dragons who are unwilling or unable to consume the Scarred Wasteland's scant (and heavily diseased) flora. Sala and Alnair primarily sell seeds and other means of propagation, although their customers often return after several harvests- each generation eventually succumbs to one rot or another. Alnair uses his Nature magic to grow crops, which Sala attempts to cull using Plague magic, and the survivors are propagated so that their descendants may repeat the cycle. In the absence of Lightning patents, Sala has instead accepted that this technique will be copied, and charges quite highly for products such as training and several books describing the method and its variations. Sala is aware that some of her fellow Plague dragons view her work as abhorrent, as it encourages the growth of plants in the heartlands of the Plaguebringer. However, since Sala sees the essence of her flight as survival, she argues that her work is, in fact, quite worshipful of the Plague deity, since it culls the weak plants using disease itself- something, Sala tells herself, that the Plaguebringer herself could approve of. The only undisputed fact is that Sala's plants have certainly enabled her to survive, and thrive- she is, by far, the wealthiest dragon in her clan, and enjoys a richly-decorated (albeit Veilspun-sized) residence and luxuries to match. Alnair earns sums exactly equal to her own, but he is notable for funneling his money into the pockets of Nature sympathizers and spies, and lives somewhat more modestly than Sala. The Veilspun pretends not to notice what Alnair does with his share of the money, and politely tolerates his necessarily less gaudy lifestyle as an eccentricity.

Groceries:
Vizkr- Butcher.
Xerarch - Operates a general store. Sells ordinary items such as rope, preservatives, and fishhooks. The store, being based in a well-visited city, is thriving.

Construction and maintenance:
Upelluri - Architect. General, unspecialized, though most experienced with the design of residential buildings for a wide variety of breeds.
Kuruneta - Carpenter and woodworker.
Dexamene - In charge of plumbing and sanitation, no mean feat in a Plague city.

Energy Production:
Elkurud - A former engineer of the Lightning flight, Elkurud was exiled on suspicion of subterfuge- at the very least, he was seen fraternizing with a dragon who became known as an Arcane spy. He is one of three dragons in charge of providing the clan with energy, although he is the least hands (claws?) on of any of them, and spends most of his working hours designing new technology in his ailing vineyard.
Halki - Although, like Elkurud, Halki's responsibilities include the designing of new energy technologies, name is more pragmatic than his mate. He is usually the one to bring their projects to life, and he is the one who attentively repairs them.
Regmaglypt - The head electrician in Waterborne. Without Regma, it is unlikely that the technologies of Halki and Elkurud would ever be connected to practical buildings such as the hospital, and they probably would not have been built at all. Regma views introducing electric wiring to clans (unfortunately) located outside of the Shifting Expanse as being the purest form of allegiance to the Stormcatcher that she can muster- spreading Lightning's influence far beyond its borders. It didn't take long for her to find an unfortunate, electrically-lacking village in a neighbouring domain- the Sunbeam Ruins -and she travelled with the clan as it moved to Plague territory and became the town presently called Waterborne. She is responsible for connecting the entire clan via electric amenities and necessities. In her role as head electrician, she is able to plan the maintenance and expansion of this system, jobs which she undertakes herself. She is exceptionally hardworking, but distrusting in others' commitment to the job. She views Elkurud and Halki as kind, but doddery, members of a bygone generation of Lightning dragons, and considers (somewhat fairly in the vineyard-nurturing Elkurud's case) them to be severely lacking in work ethic- something which she perceives as an abhorrence in any self-respecting Lightning dragon.

Sunniva's medical practice:
Sunniva - Head healer, trained as a doctor in the Sunbeam Ruins. General healer of Waterborne, based in a specialised building and does not usually travel.
Metieta - Wandering healer, trained as Sunniva's apprentice. Predominantly works in the regions around Waterborne rather than within the town.
Acropora - Mental healer, mostly analogous to a counsellor in role but capable of (and occasionally has to) take the role of a healer/doctor.

Pharmacy, apothecary, herb-cultivation, other healing and medicine:
Jasper is an apothecary. His shop has grown quite large, and requires both himself and his child-in-law, Quinilan, to manage it. He grows medicinal plants as a hobby, and one of his children, Mazatl, has turned this hobby into a feature of an expansive, well-managed farm.
Fen is the dentist. He keeps an extremely small shop and mostly makes house calls. He is adept at removing tarter and fashioning quite realistic false teeth using earth magic. He works with everyone from Imperial dragons to other Veilspun. In emergencies, he has also served as a nurse for other small dragon species, under Sunniva's tutelage.

Science and engineering:
Tara is a chemist. She mostly conducts research, but has a thriving ability to create antiseptics. Despite her primal eyes she is not, as was presumed about her as a hatchling, more connected to the Lightweaver or light magic than others of her flight. If anything, she's rather bad at light magic. She generally lives off the niche commercial success of the dyes and chemicals with cleaning applications that she has discovered how to synthesize.
Shaushka is an inventor. She is lively, and an expert at creating machinery to help others do their jobs more easily. Her collaboration with Hanwasuit is producing vehicles that are capable of surviving in the Scarred Wasteland.
Hanwasuit is an inventor, albeit one from Light and not Lightning. They are an expert on creating communications systems, often inspired by technology found in the Stormcatcher's territory. They have also teamed up with Shaushka to produce some fun vehicles that can withstand the Scarred Wasteland.

Trade
Yingyu - The first trader to use this clan as his base, Yingyu buys and sells various precious gems and materials. Glamorous though it sounds, his cargo is always the rough, uncut varieties of various gems, which he sells directly to jewelers, gemologists, and the odd collector with whom he is in contact. He has many links among the forges of the Ashfall Waste and the cities of Dragonhome.
Grus - Merchant, especially antiques and rarities obtained from the Scarred Wasteland. Formerly a scavenger, and still goes out to obtain his own wares. However, his reputation has spread, and it's now more common for wandering scavengers to approach his office, on the edges of the city, instead. Owns a trade vessel with an impermanent crew that transports weights larger than those which can be moved by courier. He is rumored to be involved in the smuggling of Plague alcohol and yeasts out of its territory.
Sunrise - Operates a hostel within Waterborne. It is sparse, but relatively cheap and guaranteed to be free of infection. Although unwilling to entertain (or, often, communicate with) his guests, Sunrise takes pride in his hostel's selling point- safety and sanity -and is vigilant (to the point of paranoia) against attacks.
Laniakea has created a glassworking business. He makes everything from windowpanes to test tubes to ornamental vases. He also produces very delicately made lens at the request of the clan's optometrist. He is assisted by his somewhat flakey, but very talented, apprentice Hapantali. She is technically too experienced to be an apprentice, but prefers it for some reason.
Arevik is a talkative Mirror who runs an information retrieval business- she collects and, on request, summarizes material relating to a topic of interest, be it a date, an event, an historic or genealogical figure, or a subject of study. She has many contacts with a variety of libraries across Sornieth, and has a large, albeit slightly decrepit, collection of scrolls of her own.

Arts
Gravity is the clan's photographer, employed to capture everything from stolid portraits to aerial pictures of digsites, and everything in between. He owns a small photography studio off main street, but will sometimes disappear from Waterborne for weeks at a time in order to take photographs of the Scarred Wasteland and its denizens. These trips have varying results- sometimes he'll come back with excellent reels of film to be developed, and other times he'll make a beeline for Sunniva's clinic or the apothecary. His misadventures never seem to dampen his enthusiasm for too long, and his collection of Scarred Wasteland studies is steadily growing.
Unnamed (1) - Publisher and printer. Founder of Bilworper Books, but mostly produces poster and labels for seed packaging.

Government
Nenuphar - Mayor
Mzia - Head transport official of Waterborne, monitors movement in and out of the city. Usually found on the designated landing pads designed for large breeds in particular.

Religion
Shreya is a Plague priestess. Some members of the clan view her with skepticism, but she has (by far) the most contacts with the Plaguebringer's forces than anyone in the clan. Her job is funded less for its popularity (the town is home to both dragons and Beastclan, and many of its dragons do not worship the Plaguebringer) than it is for its convenience. Having a priestess and a nice shrine to the Plaguebringer keeps the town under the radar of the Plaguebringer's forces. Shreya isn't entirely despised though- she is often able to recommend future exaltees for their favored careers, and acquire letters to parents, or explanation's of a child's silence, that would otherwise not be possible.

Other roles:
Illuyanka - Exclusively dedicated to guarding her Charge.
Pontopereia is a tour guide whose clients are mostly smaller breeds, and other Snappers, searching for quick routes across the treacherous wasteland. However, Perry aims to provide each of her tour groups with a more memorable experience than avoiding almost certain death. She painstakingly points out pieces of local history, attractions, and legends, with a zeal and enthusiasm more characteristic of a Spiral than a Snapper. Perry previously gave tours in the Emperor's Wake. Her continued existence is a mystery.

Characters and roles in the clan:
Minktooth is a scavenger, unusual among the clan for having a single official name. Otherwise, this scrawny scavenger is an almost archetypical denizen of the Scarred Wasteland. They're an expert on finding food and methods of survival.
