Biography

Brief
Birthed of a rare ice storm in the southern portion of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, this stoic Guardian found his projective charge in Aoide. The Tidelord whispered to him in his dreams that this conflicted Mirror and her clan are destined for greatness, but that it will be a long uphill struggle. The two leaders produced one clutch of three eggs, but it was not in their destinies to be mates. Boreas’ sole charge is to protect the clan—with or without Aoide’s blessing.

Story: The Founders of the Lair
There was water, and there was wind. There was thunder, and there was ice. There was the Tidelord, and all elements in his own realm must do his bidding.

Elemental encroachments from four realms met in a primordial battle, but the Tidelord was triumphant. The snowstorm raged on the edge of his Sea for a little, and then it ran itself out...or nearly so. The last little defiant puff of wind swirled itself around the last snowflake, and fashioned itself into a Dragon--a Guardian Male, white as the ice and brown as all other elements combined.

But the Tidelord had the last word. The Dragon opened his blue eyes and spied the sea. He flapped his mighty wings and dove in, wallowing in the shallows. It was there that the Tidelord spoke.

Boreas...son...your charge lies before you...guard her well...her clan will serve me and all the gods...for peace…

Boreas ceased his wallow and stood up. Water ran in dripping rivulets down all his scales. The sun was just rising as a beautiful Mirror leaped from the water, spreading her sea-green wings. She saw him on the shoreline and flew in his direction.

“Oh…”

He met her eyes and felt deep peace within himself. She was his Charge. He would be near her always.

The Mirror seemed disappointed. “You are...not quite what I was expecting.”

That did not matter. He would go where she went. Together they traveled along the shore until they came to the cave of Aoide’s dreams. There they found dens, and small pools which would be perfect as hatcheries. He mentioned this to her.

She seemed uncomfortable. “I appreciate you looking out for me. Really I do. But I don’t think you are the one for me.”

“But I know that you are my destiny,” he replied. Though he came into being as a fully grown adult, he could not discern the difference between the feelings he had toward his charge and the feelings he should have toward a mate.

Reluctantly, Aoide agreed to one nest. Soon after, as they sat watching the eggs crack, a little part of her heart cracked too. “We can’t do this again,” she said. “We are not meant to be together as mates. I know what I have seen in my vision, and you are not there...at least,” she added hesitantly, realizing the vision was fading from her memory, “I don’t think so. Not as my mate, anyway.”

Boreas watched her, realizing the same thing. Still, he was satisfied. “That does not matter. I will be here, watching over you, your eggs, and your clan. Always. Even if you find another mate. Even if I do. For you are my Charge, and I cannot and will not leave you.”

Story: Unforeseen Dalliance
She arrived late at night, in the middle of a storm. Boreas was out of the cave, watching, as he always was. "Can I help you?" he asked.

She stiffened at his appearance, gleaming ghost-like in between lightning flashes. "I only need one thing," she replied, wearily. "My task, allotted from my ancestors, is to mate--and then die."

"You are not old enough to mate," he responded gently, feeling a deep sense of pity. He had heard of these dragons; homeless, witless, friendless, lifeless.

She looked up, suddenly seeming as frightened as a lost child. "I had been doomed to wander until I was."

"Not anymore," Boreas said firmly, wrapping his wing around her. "You belong to my clan now. And that makes you my charge and my responsibility."

She shivered. "It's cold out tonight."

"Tell me about your task, while I watch." His head was turned away from hers, always watching.

"I am Shadowborn," she replied. "My ancestors and descendants are all dedicated to the Shadowbinder. We serve her in reproducing once, and passing on. We serve the deity closest to us, but in our hearts we are Shadowborn."

He looked at her golden eyes, but said nothing.

"It was a great honor," she said softly. "My heritage goes back generations...I was proud to carry on the lineage."

"But..."

"But...to never have a clan to call one's own. To never truly love a mate. To never raise my hatchlings, to have no friends, no life, nothing but a task that grows ever more burdensome..."

He steadied her as she wept. His kindness had unnerved her, he could tell. "You have a home now," he said firmly. "And a mate, if that is your desire. If after the eggs hatch, you find that you still need to go to the Tidelord, or the Shadowbinder, or the Lightweaver, or any other...that is your choice. But you are also welcome here, for as long as you will stay."

She scanned his face. "But you--are clanbound. You are the leader! Surely you have a mate?"

He shook his head. "We agreed to one nest, but no more. She has since found a new mate. I do not mind it so much, because I am the Clan Guardian. Above all else, my task is to watch." And to care for all the members of the clan. And if that caring required a nest...it was a little lonely, at times, just watching. Alone.

Final decision?
