~ Marina TSVETAEVA ~
Age: 25 years old (looks, human years)
Ability: The Devil.
The mysterious ability of the Devil’s absolute might is unknown even of its user ; the ability in itself is out of her control, yet not out of its control. The Devil allows its user to bring the dead into a physical shape, yet, it does seem to have a life of its own.
Its original shape is the one of an anthropomorphised dog: almost hairless grey skin on an almost human-like body: bare and muscular human legs and ended by dog’s paws with grey claws. Wearing no horns, but a tail, as alive as a snake would be. Its head is the one of a mastiff ; and his eyes: colorless, indifferent, merciless.
So is Marina’s devil.
“There was no action. He sat, I - stood. And I -- loved him.”
Marina met her devil at the age of five years old, in her sister's room two weeks after her death. More than threatening, the appealing presence that was, in fact, watching over her, more compelling, for sure, than her manipulative mother has ever been. She has been told, countless times, that she would be doomed if she transgressed the laws of God, that her mother claimed to be the embodiment of, and in this red room, stood the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil ; an old bookshelf containing the forbidden fruits ; coveted books that she was banned to ever open. There, she encountered her devil, who never left her side from then on.
In that sense, the Devil seems to be appearing only when she achieves something that is forbidden. It doesn't talk, neither does it only take one form. The greater the crime is, the stronger the embodiment will be.
However, the transgression is not linked to the country's laws, and much more to her mother's own beliefs, which were terribly irrational and yet, that has been inculcated into her daughter from her youngest age and did not cease to stick to her as she grew up, and even as her mother died. Which she did, around the time when Marina was sixteen years old.
“Today I had a dream about…. drowned men…. it was as if they took me in their arms and carried me across the river.”
Growing up, Marina completely devoted herself to poetry, Alexander Pushkin, and especially to the powerful ability, the presence that that has given freedom to her , her saviour. Dog <=> God, both terms have always been related in her precocious head. The presence has become her main source of inspiration, fated by this God that has chosen her for a life of isolation and pain, equipped to create true art beyond the creative ability of any “simple mortal”. She has always been good in what she undertook, as the pride and joy of the family, who only seemed to love her for her skills and obedience more than for herself :
her meeting with Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov made her realise what she could accomplish. A solitary dragon such as her still indulges Chichikov by her side, as a friend and advisor.
