Keening
↠ Knight

While House Aaldir is best known for its magical talent and the sprawling library beneath the city surface, there are other figures and features worth mentioning. The Knights of House Aaldir, though, are probably the most notable, non-magical force the city of Iasos boasts.

An elite league of warriors who do not possess the magical talents celebrated by Iasos's scholars, the Knights of House Aaldir accept nothing less than the greatest skills and total confidence, not only in the sense of one's self-assurance, but in the ability to keep a guarded secret close unto the end.

And among the Knights, prominent figures that they are, Keening is perhaps the most prominent. Even if he were not the cream of the crop, the very best the Knights can boast, his wings alone could draw him equal attention. Smooth as silk and glittering with bronze tips, he is a sight to see under the morning sun, soaring over the city on patrol. Failing to see him is impossible in its own right, too, thanks to his exuberant nature. Unlike some Knights, he does not distance himself from the city, a stoic protector. Instead, he involves himself in Iasos's daily routines, a familiar figure on every street, and a trusted companion to those in need.

The children of Iasos, though, are his favored wards. There's something so bright and eager in their faces whenever he alights near their parks and front doors, and nothing can bring joy like the laughter of a hatchling watching Keening spin and twirl in the morning light.

These dragons, so easily entertained by even the most basic of Keening's aerial maneuvers, are the future of Iasos. He sees it in each one of them, the shining glimpse of time yet to pass in their eyes and hearts. Gladly, he would lay down his life for the city, but more than that, he would die for each and every one of these young dragons if it meant they would not suffer another day in their lives.

Perhaps this is why Keening is the Sworn Sword of Iasos, a rank few are privileged to hold even among the Knights. Not only can he guard a secret to the end of his days, masking it under his cavalier exterior, but he is prepared for the end of his days to come bitter and sudden. More than that, he is ready to rise to the occasion if that means the continued prosperity of his city. It's a devotion of an almost godly caliber, and he wears it well in every fond smile and warm greeting.

In all of Iasos's history, there has never been a Sworn Sword so committed to peace, but Keening hopes there always will be in the years yet to come.

Keening was perhaps the most prominent among House Aaldir’s warriors. He was a good-looking drake, his hide glinting iron-gray with flashes of bronze. His most distinctive feature, however, was his wings, for he had six, not two.

“Is he a monster? A demon?” the dragons of Iasos wondered when they first saw him. He came to House Aaldir, offering his services as a warrior, and was afterwards accepted into their ranks. He became a common sight in the nearby town as well, for he often came here when he was off-duty.

The townsdrakes soon warmed up to Keening. Their suspicious whispers faded away, until most of them reckoned he might have fairy or angel blood instead. The town’s hatchlings couldn’t have cared less, however. Monster, demon, fairy, or angel—to them, Keening was far better than any of these: he was awesome.

~ ~ ~
“Now, youngsters, remember never to attempt this maneuver at home! I call it…” And Keening spread his wings. “...Thundering Triple Torque 2000!”

His audience, a cavalcade of the town’s hatchlings, oohed and aahed appreciatively...except for one, who queried, “Is ‘torque’ that word that looks like I should say ‘turkey’?”

Keening endured the hatchlings’ laughter with good grace. He did many things with good grace. The townsdrakes’ admiration hadn’t escaped his notice, and he was happy to demonstrate his prowess for them. An apple on a branch just out of reach? —Why, Keening would cut it down in a trice. A scribe’s papers snatched away by the wind? —Keening would snatch them back straightaway.

Indeed, he was more a help than a hindrance, although the townsdrakes frowned at the stunts he often demonstrated for the hatchlings. Many of these could be...what was the word...insane.

“Thank you for watching over my children!” one of the town’s matrons gushed. As the hatchlings scattered, she continued, “I was so busy today...Plenty of cleaning to do. The dust has just built up!”

“Oh, it was nothing,” Keening declared with a bow. His snout quivered, however. The matron had mentioned...dust?

Atishoo! Keening practically exploded, his feathers puffing up as his allergies assailed him. The hatchlings watched, starry-eyed, as he sailed up and down, his six wings flapping frantically.

“New trick!” they cheered, thronging around him once he’d crash-landed. Keening managed a watery-eyed smile. “Nothing of the sort; I’m just sensitive to dust! Now, then...”

He beat a hasty (but still graceful) retreat to the outskirts of town. There flowed a river, and he spent some time washing the dust from his feathers. Magic would have been useful, but it wasn’t his forte. And he hadn’t reckoned on little mishaps like this.

Still, it didn’t really faze him. Tomorrow, duty would beckon, but after that, there’d be more free time. Time to wander and relax, maybe even refine a few more tricks....

“Life’s awesome when you’re awesome,” Keening thought, winking at his reflection. And, with his wings and self-confidence intact once more, he headed back to House Aaldir for the night.

A glorious blade gleams under the light of the sun, beckoning little hatchlings to act as cavalry and charge, snaking around Keening, each climbing atop another to get a closer look. Flash, strike, flash, strike - ooos and ahhs join together in one wonderous appreciation of the exquisite forms on display.

Watch: A charming smile, a flick of the wrist, a wink and a swoon resulting. Keening stands tall, chest puffed and proud, a sword guardian of the House. Without magic, and a little allergy to dust, yet nevertheless a thundering heart full of courage that shines just as bright as his blade - not one to be simply declared an "asset", but to be declared friend, family, beloved protector.
