Biography

FIRNEN
Fire and Paper Crafter

Firnen is the first son of Olynfar and Silmeria of Clan Wicked Wings of The Observatory. Born with an appreciation for fire that hearkens back to his own father's element, he could stay for hours around the warmth of a fire. Wanting to make sure that all dragons can have an endless supply of light source, he turned his sights to developing all kind of light sources to sell to others across Sornieth.

While he's starting to learn how to make candles, he's also taken up glass blowing for oil lamps as well as paper crafts for paper lanterns. Being young his skills are definitely not refined, but he hopes with time they'll get better. If he can find someone to take him on as an apprentice, though, his training might speed up.

He sat by the glowing lava, letting the warmth soak into his scales. Night was quickly approaching, the sun casting an orange glow over the scorched landscape. The banescale looked down at the delicate paper in his claws. He had strayed away from his normal color pallet and chose a dark blue with gold filigree. He had meticulously folded it into a simple lantern. Setting it down next to the other two, he crossed his forearms and watched the last of the sunset burn away.

Gentle footfalls came up behind him. “Planning on releasing some more lanterns tonight?”

The banescale looked up to see his mate, Maras. “I’m not sure. I only have three so far. I would have liked to release more.”
The female sat down and examined the largest of the three. She traced her claw gently over the silver pattern. He had come a long way since he started. His lanterns and glasswork were becoming better every time, despite what he thinks.

“You could teach me how to make lanterns. I could help you make a few more,” the female suggested.

Firnen stretched out and sat up. He pushed the small stack of paper over to her. She grabbed the top one, a big gold sheet with red designs along the edge. He took the next sheet and laid the rest aside.

“Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get it correct right away. It took me a long time to come up with the correct directions to make it look nice,” he said, giving her a small smile. He wouldn’t normally share his secrets with someone else, but how could he say no to her? He was hoping that maybe she could help him out at times, someone to bounce new ideas off.

“Okay,” he started. “Take the top left corner and fold it down like this.”

By the light of the running lava, the two made more lanterns. Lanterns of blue and gold, red and gray, orange and black. All different sizes, from paw size, to ones that they would both need to release. They lost track of time, and before they knew it, they had a good bunch of lanterns to light and release. The sky was lit up with stars, flickering ever so softly. It was a perfect night to release these.

“Okay,” Firnen said. “We need to get all of these lit so they can fill with hot air, and we are in the best place to do that.”
He walked over to a lava stream and set the tip of a branch on fire. Touching the glowing flame to the oil, he lit on of the smaller lanterns. It didn’t take long for it to start rising, allowing him to let it go. The two watched it float higher, becoming a small speck amongst the stars. The female grabbed a stick and lit it in the stream. Walking over to a lantern she made, she lit it and let it go.
Until the first dawn broke, the two took turns releasing lanterns, lighting up their small part of the sky.
