Personality and Clan Life by ZincAlloy

Some dragons take most of their lives to find their true calling. For others, they realise it at a young age. In Seraphina's case, it may as well have been instinctual.

As a hatchling, she entertained herself by contorting herself into a variety of shapes and watching her shadow play upon the wall. When she was a bit older, she used herself as a shadow puppet to put on plays for her parents, though she always ended up tied into knots before she could finish the first act.

But throughout the course of her childhood, Seraphina realized that acting wasn't her strong suit. Not only was she unable to memorize more than a handful of lines, her boundless enthusiasm ruined even the saddest of scenes with fits of giggling. Thus she turned her focus to two things: writing and magic. With a combination of the two and a bit of hard work, she knew she could become a great playwright, or at the very least put on a good show trying.

Eventually, she penned her first script, and recruited some of her friends as actors. One of them, a bright blue ridgeback, played the lead role in her first ever showing of Cyano de Bargerac. And even though her audience was just her fellow clan members, Seraphina's actors still put their all into their performance. And Seraphina herself didn't take a passive role either.

No, for shadow dragons have a gift for illusions, and while Seraphina wrote her script she was also practising her magic. Thus not only was her clan treated to a great story and good acting, but Seraphina's skills provided sights and sounds that made the audience feel as if they were really there. At the climax of Cyano's story, one dragon even passed out from the excitement! Seraphina was a bit disappointed about that though, she'd been hoping for a couple more.

After the show, and once her ears had stopped ringing from the thunderous cheering of her audience, Seraphina found herself greeted with even more good news. A traveller from a neighbouring clan had seen the show, and invited her to perform in their clan, with a promise of lodging and a sizable bag of treasure as a reward. After that performance, another request. After that, two more. Seraphina's popularity spread throughout of the Wispwillow Grove, and thus her theatre troupe was born.

From then on, her plays' performances were a constant, even more so than the troupe's name. For as actors joined and left, so did ideas and agreement on what the group should be called. Theoretically, Seraphina could have overruled the other's suggestions with her own, but the one thing every actor could agree on was the "The Iridescent Bananas" didn't roll off the tongue in the slightest. Seraphina just took it in stride. She made sure that no matter what the group was called, everyone knew she was the one running it, and let that fame propel her and her actors to great heights and greater piles of treasure.

Even without a reliable name, Seraphina's group became well renowned. Rival troupes just couldn't compete with the stellar writing of works such as The Taming of the Tigerblood Foo, especially not when the playwright's illusions made it seem as if the foo was in the theatre itself, running right past the captivated dragons in the front row. Not that her rivals didn't try to outshine her, but their follies such as using actual fire which actually burnt down the stage, or bringing a live hydra to the performance (anything involving a live hydra is always a bad idea) just served as further evidence to Seraphina's place as the greatest playwright.

However, with fame comes unwanted attention, and Seraphina was no exception. It was after a sold-out performance of A Fae Boat Named Desire when Seraphina, exhausted from a full hour of casting illusions, found herself accosted by two larger dragons wearing the regalia of the Shadowbinder's army. It had seemed that the spiral's fame was so great that the Shadowbinder herself, or at least one of her generals, had heard of her.

The pair were requesting that Seraphina write a new script, one that announced the greatness of the Shadowbinder's forces for all Sornieth to hear. Propaganda!? This was an offence to Seraphina and her art twice over, but the spiral tried not to let her rage show in her voice. Instead, she politely denied their offer, and spun around to leave.

Laughing, one of the pair told her that this wasn't a choice, and there was no refusing this demand. Seraphina just declined again, more forcefully this time. Shaking his head, the other soldier assumed Seraphina didn't understand, and drew his weapon to show the consequences of refusal. But the spiral just refused again, with surprising force for the lungs of a small dragon. The first of the two spoke up again, going into extreme detail about the awfully painful things that Seraphina had in her future if she continued to not comply, until he was suddenly interrupted. Seraphina's next refusal came with shockingly great force, force so great that it appeared to blast Seraphina herself out of existence. This was because Seraphina had finally flown out of the range of her illusion magic, but the two had no way of knowing that.

When she reunited with her troupe, having left the soldiers very confused, Seraphina's anger had coalesced and turned to defiance. Not only was her show going to go on without any propaganda, but she was going to star in her newest production, just to rub it in. After all, she'd always practised with her actors as they rehearsed their lines, so Seraphina knew she was capable of playing the lead role of Death of a Salesdragon. Her confidence was so great that she completely failed to notice the possibly prophetic title of her newest work. Some members of the troupe didn't, but they trusted their leader, and knew to show must go on.

CW5VPLl.png On the day of the showing, everything was going as planned. The audience were enraptured, and Seraphina was doing just fine as the lead. But at the start of the final act, a trio of soldiers entered from stage right, with murder clear in their eyes. Thinking fast, and putting the show before her own life, Seraphina's character announced the three to be debt collectors, come to take her life and her livelihood. She then took to the air, flying loops around the three while still acting out her lines.

Her actors, while not fighters in the slightest, still stepped in to save their lead. Each of the other characters stepped in to trade a couple of blows before retreating, while those who worked backstage dropped sandbags and bits of the prop scenery on the three. Cyano even made a surprise appearance, the ridgeback dressed as him impaling one of the soldiers with his nose, much the the crowd's amusement. In the end, Seraphina perched upon the beaten and unconscious soldiers, and improvised a sappy soliloquy about how being broke and overworked wasn't so bad when you had friends willing to save you, before the curtains finally closed. From the cheers Seraphina could hear while backstage, the crowd seemed to have loved it, to the point where not one was bothered that the salesdragon's death promised by the title never happened. Seraphina made a note to change the original script so that there could be repeat performances.

However, Seraphina thought it likely that the Shadowbinder's forces were comprised of more than three dragons. Knowing that as long as she was around, they'd continue making trouble for the rest of her troupe, she made the difficult decision to leave. It was a tearful departure, as her actors decided to remain in their home flight and continue performing. Before she left, Seraphina promised to have the couriers deliver a copy of any new scripts she penned, and then took to the skies to seek a new home.

In many ways, Seraphina's stay at the Aequitas Clan has been an extended vacation. She made a lot of treasure from the theatre, and thus really hasn't had to do much work. Instead, she's focused on relaxing and writing, quite enjoying not having to constantly travel from clan to clan.

However, while Seraphina plans to get back into the business, she's hoping that her name carries enough weight in the Isles to bring an audience to her, and not the other way around. So whether she brings back her old troupe or gathers a new one, she plans to to build a massive theatre somewhere nearby in the Runic Mountain Range and perform there. Her illusions are ready, the script for The Glass Bestiary is almost complete, and before long the works of Seraphina will once again be the talk of Sornieth! Well, maybe after another week of rest. She's found quite a comfortable spot, and this looks like a good time for a nap.

While generally a considerate dragon, Seraphina can be quite offended if you've never heard of her or her works. Luckily, you won't be offending her for long, as you'll be provided with a copy of every one of her plays to be read at your leisure or immediately, whichever comes first. Seraphina wants everyone to know of her profession, to the point where the skulls in her wingpiece have been twisted into the shapes of the classic tragedy and comedy masks. Now, while anything that twists bones is generally thought of as dark magic, this is probably another one of Seraphina's illusions. Probably.

As far as masters of illusion go, Seraphina is in the running for the top. Not that she uses them for much in the way of anything that isn't the theatre. Presumably, some permanent illusions could be quite useful for the defence of the clan, but Seraphina's never bothered. Maybe just because nobody would think to ask a playwright for help with defence, or just plain old not caring. She does still create copies of herself quite often, using their realism to slink away from anyone she really doesn't want to speak to. You can argue with one for quite some time, often only realising its true nature after you try to punch it in the face and make a fool of yourself.

Well, most of the time. Magic doesn't always work as expected in the Runic Mountain Range, and thus sometimes those copies turn out too large, with inverted colours, or appearing to literally be on fire. In these cases, Seraphina hopes that your confusion upon three of her suddenly speaking in harmonic triplicate gives her enough time to speed away from the scene.

Recently, Seraphina has begun rebuilding her theatre troupe, but it's been slow going. She's only found one member so far, and they're not even a dragon. They're a corn snake. A talented one, to be fair. Banana has an excellent sense of timing, and can be counted on to pull the levers that activate the special effects at exactly the right moment. From opening and closing the curtains to adjusting the lights, there's little backstage work that Banana can't do... as long as someone else sets it up in the first place. They're a bit too small to move the scenery around. Unfortunately, Banana's also quite the critic, which is why Seraphina's had trouble rebuilding her troupe. During tryouts, Banana likes to slither up above the stage and send the sandbags crashing down onto the heads of anyone whose acting fails to impress them. So far, that's been everyone.
