It does not matter who you are, what titles you hold, what riches you've amassed, what reputation precedes you. The storm strips all to the bone.

This is what her parents and her birth clan teach Lei. Before she can be a full fledged member and join the clan in full, she has to pass one test: fly through the single, most dangerous storm of the Shifting Expanse and survive.

As a hatchling, she yearns for that trial by lightning, wanting to prove herself to her friends and family. Now, as she stands on the cusp of adulthood, with the knowledge that she must prove her worthiness by risking her life and that refusing to do so would mean exile, Lei shudders.

On the night of her trial, she faces the storm. It howls and thunders in the distance, billowing black clouds swirling ominously. She imagines a face in that dark, surging mass, leering at her and her fear, and she imagines the words it might speak to bring her to her knees.

She does the only thing she can think of: she runs.

Shame and fear gnaws at her heart, but not once does Lei turn back. It isn't till she's crossed the border and has her claws in the soft sand of the Sea of a Thousand Current that she can breathe easy.

Even now, years later, Lei refuses to face the facts. It wasn't her life that she feared for, nor for the acceptance of her birth clan. Far worse: she feared being shorn down, whittled away, till all that was left was her truth. Being stripped of bravado, courage, kindness. Being known.

She still shies away from intimacy. It reminds her too much of the storm.
