MAEVE
"Quiet when I'm coming home and I'm on my own"

xxxxxxx

She was born in a rainy day, she remembers this much. As far as Maeve recalls, her mother was Moranna, who scavenged her egg and raised her with love and caring. The young spiral had a knick for always saying how the days would be, weeks ahead. As a hatchling, she didn't pick up how special that was, but obviously, Moranna saw otherwise. It wasn't like elders so used to the life in one place they'd know clues on the weather. No. As Moranna started keeping track of the dates Maeve said, she noticed her young daughter could predict the weather years ahead.

That... is when their relationship started going downhill. Moranna was too greedy and ambitious. She started travelling with Maeve selling out her weather divination skills for a hefty price. Always on the move, always on the move. They'd stay in one place just long enough for Maeve to predict the weather on the coming two or three years and off they went again.

Always on the move, always on the move.

As Maeve reached a more mature age, she was desperate to grow some roots and live in a single clan. Old enough to pick on her own mother's habits and greedy personality, she started faking divination dreams claiming she could perhaps see more and exploit even more of her abilities if she had proper training.

Moranna was obviously interested in investing a few years, if that meant even more of rarity on her daughter's powers. And so they researched a suitable divination teacher for Maeve and so they ended up on Porto, where she became an apprentice under Luar.

"
Dark blue sea, calling me
Songs of waves, keep me safe
Sky's so deep, there's no end
The moon still asleep
The bed of stars for me
How can I see through your eyes my destiny?
I fall apart, you bleed for me
How can I see through your eyes our worlds collide?
Open your heart
To close our great divide

A LIFE SHE LONGED FOR

Luar is painfully aware of Moranna's exploitation of her daughter. She purposefully delays any 'training' with Maeve and takes her sweet time between practices just so the girl can enjoy a little longer of the life she leads in Porto. Luar often tried to dissuade Maeve from following her mother's orders but alas, Maeve loves her. Moranna is loving and caring towards her, but is cruel and harsh because of her powers. Still, Maeve doesn't want to desert her. She hopes maybe living in Porto will make her mother leave behind the idea of living on the road.

She encourages her mother's affairs in town, her friendships and relations. Maeve herself found a few friends in town in Cali and Zara, fellow apprentices, as well as in Taliha, with whom she's close in age.

Maeve is quite cunning, and very perceptive. She loves living in a big clan and recently started quite enjoying playing cupid between dragons. It's a terrible hobby of hers, meddling in the love affairs of others but she's a hopeless romantic and dreads the idea that time could play a hand in keeping people apart. She's aware time is always running out on her, and is quite anxious. She doesn't want to waste any time.

Good weather

by the ever so talented Joywing!

xxxxxxxFrom the day she was born, Maeve was familiar with the wind and rain. A cold chill that wrapped around the body as she flew through the air, dots of water rolling off her scales. In her visions, and in reality, there were little differences of course. Direction, intensity, whether it would last for a moment or a lifetime. Yet, they all shared the same meaning: that she would have to leave again.

xxxxxxxTo others, her methods seemed mysterious, an omen of the whims of the sky, but for her it was all too predictable. She would come, her mother would be paid, and she would say whatever they wanted her to say before moving onto the next. The many places she went all blurred together, never staying long enough to see anything more than the weather she watched. Her only company across those many seas were her mother and that ever-changing sky.

xxxxxxxThe skies above Porto was the first one that she really saw, not as another blur in the unceasing flow of time, but as a scene rooted in the present. They were an aqua green, the blues reflected in the waves of the ocean. The colours of the sky would bleed into the waves, a beautiful sight of sunset when resting on the soft sands of the shore. The white sea foam would ebb and flow, crashing on the shore as ships departed. The world moved, but she was still.

xxxxxxxThe wind here carried the smell of sea salt, and the voices of the many faces of the ports. Pausing from the journey, her ears could pick out the faces behind the voices, distinct personalities from the roar of the winds. There was the patient Luar, subtle and quiet, her guide in understanding the meaning of her powers. The headstrong Cali, steadfast and sturdy in her support. They were more than just another customer, or just another source of profit.

xxxxxxxThen there was Taliha. She was the first to greet Maeve when she arrived with her mother, offering friendship without hesitation. The young skydancer insisted on bringing her to all of her favourite spots in Porto, dragging the shy Maeve wherever she went. Maeve never saw herself shopping for the latest apparel in the clothing stores, or adorning herself in fine jewelry, but Taliha’s energy was infectious. The spiral had to admit that it made her happy, too.

xxxxxxxThere was one distinct memory, a treasure found only in those little moments of constancy. Taliha had insisted that she come along on another trip, a special one. The sun had set, weaving a tapestry of stars across the sky.

xxxxxxx– Are you sure we should really be out this late? – The spiral asked, looking as the windows began to glow with lamplight. The skydancer looked back with a grin, flicking her feathers in style.

xxxxxxx– It’ll be worth it, I promise! Besides, it’s safe out here, we’ll only be gone a few hours. We’ll be fiiiine. – With a knowing wink, Taliha led the way, winding up the path.

xxxxxxxAt the top of the hill, the sight was one to behold. So far from the lights of the port town, the stars shone bright, a galaxy woven across the night sky. The Skydancer laid down on the soft grass at the foot of the trees, her arms behind her head as she gazed upwards. Maeve was familiar with the sky, but the cooling night wind wasn’t lonely anymore. A serenity settled over her, as she felt she could lay there forever.

xxxxxxx– You probably see the sky a lot in your training, but I wanted to show you my stargazing spot while the skies were clear. I hope it’s alright. – Taliha said, sheepishly.

xxxxxxx– No Taliha, it’s more than alright. This is perfect. – The spiral responded, a smile creeping onto her face.

xxxxxxxSitting there, they talked for hours, about everything and nothing. The dragons that came by the port, their everyday work, amusing bits of gossip that passed their ears. Maeve wasn’t a prodigy here. They were just two girls, without a care in the world.

xxxxxxxEventually, they were too tired to stay awake, and they had to leave. With a sad smile, Maeve bade her goodbye, returning to the cloister of her training until another day.

xxxxxxxIf she said nothing, those days would be gone again like morning mist, swept away on a never-ending journey for more and more. Those skies would be once again unfamiliar, ripped apart by those bitter winds of parting. She foresaw it, but she would not accept it. Not when she found a place where she was happy.

xxxxxxxShe would continue to train, not just in mind, but in heart as well. Step by step, just that little bit braver, until she could stand fast and firm. Until her mother could hear her voice, roaring out against the winds of change.
