"What happened to your pearl?"

The moment anyone finds that the spherical object Callidice carries is fake, they inquire about the location of her pearl. Perhaps they assume that she's lost it or that it was otherwise destroyed. In turn, Callidice only smiles.

When she was born, the Pearlcatcher had formed her pearl around a kernel, the seed pod of a great tree that had fallen into her nest and entangled itself among the eggshells. It became the core of her pearl, until the day that she found a widening crack in the luminous surface, two green leaves forcing themselves up towards the sun from within.

The pearl itself was never destroyed or lost, it is simply buried. Deep within the earth it rests, now entwined with the roots of a tree. All the memories she's stored are still there too, growing and branching towards the light until at last, they bloom into flowers or are carried away as pollen upon the wind. Indeed, those who smell the flowers of a certain tree may find themselves bearing witness to brief flickers of memories that are not their own.
