The Undead Queen

And what of me? Am I to breathe this newfound air and forget what I once was?

The Warrior-Queen Seraphina was a woman feared many empires over. Dragons established themselves, in those far-gone days, and empires built themselves across backs, only to topple when a warrior-king was slain. Seraphina was different than the rest. She was a ferocious fighter, but unlike many others, her people truly loved her. She passed the laws that the people wanted, and she often walked the streets with sharp cries of adoration behind her. Her laws always pandered to her supporters, and this made the other high-ranking dragons of her little kingdom quite...nervous.

See, once, there had been a tyrant. Seraphina had struck him down, but the memory of his slow usurpation of control stung these other dragons. While Seraphina passed laws for the people, these laws also gave Seraphina more control over things that her fellows would rather not have her control.

It came to pass that a war between Seraphina' clan and another arrived, and Seraphina strode at the front of her army, as she always did. Surrounded, Seraphina sounded the call for reinforcements; she waited, fighting as hard as she could, but the reinforcements never came. Mortally wounded, a sword hewn through her, Seraphina dragged her body into a nearby cave and holed up there, collapsing amid the rocks.

How long she laid dead did not matter; by the time she was discovered, nothing remained but her skeleton.

Until, that was, she woke to find an Imperial standing before her. He looked harrowed and afraid, unbecoming of his kind. Seraphina could not remember much at all: she remembered betrayal, the fear, then the stubborn decision to take as many of her foes down as she could before she died. She could not remember her name, and so dubbed herself Remains, before declaring that she could recognize immortality when she saw it. The dragon, the Undying dragon, informed her that he could not remember his name, either.

Remains gathered her belongings as best she could, though her armor no longer fit her well enough to wear. She tried, time and again, to look into the void: she could remember the clamoring of crowds, the thrill of power, gold and glowing in her claws. But she could not remember much else than these tatters of memory. Eventually, she grew tired of facing her past only to come away wounded and empty, and embraced her place in a new life. Her new necromancer companion was...strange. Quiet. Reserved.

He saw her as his charge, though.

And, eventually, Remains came to appreciate him in a strong platonic sense. She said as much, once or twice, after patching up his wounds from some fight or other. Two immortal creatures, destined to wander forever.

Remains sometimes has dreams where she is a queen, adorned in gold and white and silver, where she marches through a crowded street. Sometimes, she dreams of the crush of bodies and the sting of defeat, the final defeat, the most important one of all.
