Banded Olivine Black Queen
Swamp Gear

Fungalhoof Qiriq Horn Rich Nickel Ore
Lightning lifted her head, looking around even though her vision was blurry with tears. Dead dragons and beasts scattered across the field━maybe some were alive. She wasn’t sure.

Hydra was alive. She was sure of that.

A black and green figure moved in her vision. It wasn’t lurching or limping, but walking normally like a dragon. Lightning turned toward it, lowering her head and raising her wings slightly, as if appearing larger deterred their enemies at all.

Instead, she saw another Guardian. A familiar Guardian. Dressed in bone armor and with a great mane and leaf-green wings, Lightning gasped. “Empyrea?”

“Lightning.” Cautiously, the bigger Guardian stepped down the shallow embankment toward her.

“You came…” Lightning said, feeling tears coming once again. “I didn’t know if you got my message…”

“I did.” Empyrea looked around. “Wander is scouting the perimeter of the battlefield, but I haven’t seen any of the dragons you described…”

“But why would you?” Lightning wondered, standing straighter and adjusted her wings to more carefully cradle Hydra’s unconscious body on her shoulders. “They’re done here.”

Empyrea didn’t look at her when she spoke, but that wasn’t altogether unusual. Empyrea was aloof, but fiercely protective. Lightning didn’t call her for help because she needed a hug. She called her for help because she was ruthless.

“You were right about the threat.” Empyrea finally looked at Lightning, apparently satisfied they were in no immediate danger. “If anything will bring the Flights together, this will.”

Empyrea has never been a nurturing mother, but she has always been a mother. Her earliest memories, even in hatchlinghood, are of rescuing homeless and abandoned hatchlings, raising them as best as she (and her mate, Wander) could. The first of the hatchlings Empyrea and Wander raised were Lightning and Hydra. As soon as the two were old enough, of course, they left for their own adventures and Empyrea and Wander continued to comb the world for interesting things to see and do, and young dragons in need of help.

Empyrea is much like Wander in that one can never tell when she’ll move off again. Like the worst of typical Wind dragons, her loyalty to anything outside of her inborn wanderlust is questionable. She does enjoy visiting her old hatchlings, though; she has gone to the Tempest Chase multiple times to meet Lightning and Hydra’s new friends and employees. Nevertheless, she will return as quickly as possible to any of her old Charges as quickly as she can if they call for help. She often ends up with more than one more hatchling to raise as the result of these calls, but that’s one reason she answers so quickly. Not many dragons are as aware of their purpose as she is.

Lightning had never called for help before, though, so she and Wander flew through the night. Lightning’s descriptions of hollow dragons infecting their prey and turning them into mindless monsters kept her up at night. Empyrea had heard similar reports from scattered clans, but wrote them off as so many exaggerated tales of monsters. But Lightning’s business was monsters. She would surely know what she was talking about. The world was in upheaval enough without a threat from dragons turning against their own kind like this.

Empyrea is a Wind dragon: experienced and resourceful like the best of them. She has a strong desire to see things she’s never seen and do things she’s never done. But, then, she’s also flighty and rarely sticks to one hobby long enough to master it. She is, however, very good at fighting and defending. She often has to do that whether she likes it or not. She protects her mate and hatchlings without regard for her own life, which has over time only made her more dangerous, more skilled, and more ruthless.

EVERGLADE LASHER - fond memory
yNMvRlY.png
ktIJohX.png
Empyrea has neither the time nor resources for pets, but she does enjoy watching fish. Her favorite memory to this day is sitting on the banks of some of the rivers in Nature territory, watching the Everglade lashers migrate upstream. In a rare moment of calm these days, Empyrea enjoys watching nature still. After all, it’s partially what she travels for: seeing what she’s never seen. She loves the movement in swarms of fish and flocks of birds, such that she’s a near-expert in this type of animal movement. Of course, to Empyrea, it is not a study or expertise at all, but rather an intuition. She just thinks they’re pretty.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Empyrea, like her mate Wander, has no surname.

» Some assume that Empyrea’s Charge is Wander, her mate. Her Charge is hatchlings. Even though she’s been through nearly uncountable number of Charges (because they keep growing up), she still feels a special attachment to the dragons that were once her Charges as babies.
