━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Twelve Scalebacks bounded down the embankment, barking and baring fangs. The lead Scaleback, golden scales on his back reflecting light into the canopy above, prowled behind his minions.

She backed into a boulder and arched her back, carefully letting her wings drag on the ground. She didn’t want to hurt them, but she couldn’t use them either. She opened her mouth to reveal rows of pointed teeth and batted her claws even though the Scalebacks were far out of her reach. “Come on,” she whispered, then reared up. “Come on!”

The Scalebacks met her challenge with ferocity. Three pounced forward, claws swinging, mouths open and ready to bite to kill.

A moment of hesitation was all they needed to draw blood. One claw, and warm liquid dripped off Hydra’s chin. Screaming at the Scalebacks in defiance, she backed away as the iridescent leader pushed through the crowd to face her.

Hydra glanced side to side for an escape as the gully narrowed and deepened. It would take some powerful and fast legs to climb out of here without wings.

The leader lunged. Hydra pulled back her wings, jumped away. An involuntary cry echoed through the gully even though the leader hadn’t touched her. But Lightning didn’t wait to be asked twice.

A gold-armored Guardian appeared behind them, startling the Scalebacks into the gully. Yipping and whimpering, a few tried climbing the embankment. One got away; the rest slid back down. Trapped. Just what they’d tried to do to Hydra.

“Are you hurt?” Lightning asked, tail flicking and teeth bared.

“I’m alright.” Hydra carefully felt around the wound on her head. It stung badly, but she doubted it was dangerous. “Took your sweet time, though, didn’t you?”

Hydra is the lieutenant of the Tempest Chase, and the one least likely to be seen making small-talk with clients. It seems like Hydra makes an effort to be rude, but Lightning has known her for longer than anyone and insists that she was born that way. Hydra keeps the dragons of the Tempest Chase in order, since she’s pragmatic when the situation calls for it... and when it does not. Though she is small, Hydra is a force to be reckoned with and a cornerstone of the hunting party. Neither a teacher nor commander, Hydra does what needs to be done, whether others are there to help her or not.

The dragons of Tempest Chase have formed ties among themselves, but none as immutably knotted as that which binds Hydra and Lightning. They’ve been together since before either of them can remember, and will be together long after everyone else has gone. Still, Hydra might have found a kindred spirit in the Tempest Chase tactician, Soren. They get along more often than they do not, often grudgingly agreeing with one another. Lightning even wondered if, perhaps, Hydra had found a sort of soul mate in Soren. It all turned out for naught, though, and Lightning continues to be more confused than anyone about Hydra’s personal life. Most puzzling of all is Hydra's relationship with Meredith, the genius Tundra that joined them as they skirted the Sea on their trek past Shadow's territory. Or perhaps non-relationship. Lightning just can’t figure it out.

Whatever the case, Hydra tends to serve as the sort of fighter that will claw out her enemies’ eyes in a flash of blue and yellow wings. She teaches other Fae dragons how to use their size, speed, and agility to their advantage, insisting that Faes need not turn to magic as their only method of attack and defence. After all, there’s little scarier than facing practiced claws and sharp insectivore teeth face-to-face.

Though Plague Flight is Hydra’s birthright, she feels no connection to her element. At times, she actively abhors it. However, though she’s renounced any association to her native Plague, she feels no draw to any other element, either, even Wind, the element she was raised by. Still, Hydra values such maxims as “survival of the fittest” and lives by them as much as any Plague dragon does.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Hydra and Riddle met as the Chase trekked across the Emberglow Hearth. Though the Chase wasn't interested in fighting anything in the Ashfall Wastes, a pack of Manticores seemed to have other ideas. Riddle was injured in the fight, abandoned by her pack, and taken in by the Chase. Even though Hydra isn't known for sympathetic sentiment, she enjoys Riddle's company. They both say exactly what they mean, have precious little sympathy, and would sooner cut off their own tails than carry out a diplomatic mission.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» As a Plague foundling, Hydra formed her name from the region she was found in: Hydra Rotrock.
»
» Hydra doesn’t particularly like Meredith the Tundra, but knows he’s head over heels for her. She also knows he’s socially inept and easily manipulated.
»
» Before the Tempest Chase acquired a cook of its own, Hydra couldn’t stand Lightning’s inept attempts and so took over the cooking herself. She’s surprisingly good.

aesthetic: Hydra likes tough but light armor, and collects the weapons of her fallen enemies, assuming they had weapons. Claws count.
likes: sitting in silence, training for battle, sharpening her claws
dislikes: teaching, talking, interacting with any dragon but Lightning or Soren
