Virulence. Pox, pestilence, plague and disease; by any other name, it never changes, pulsing through tangled veins and creeping through our minds, twisting them until we no longer know which way is up and which is down, who is friend and who is foe. We are not ourselves, not since they came.

Allow us to tell you a story, stranger, since you've wandered deep into the realms of insanity to find us. Let me tell you of our origins. Once, an age ago, we were creatures of the shadows, enveloped in the cold and kind darkness. We were suckled on it, and it lurked in our eyes, throbbed there. It was beautiful. Beauty, of course, is transient, its very nature easily corrupted and revoked.

Serephina was the first, we remember. We remember, indeed, when she came to us with ruby eyes, contaminated our darkness with sour breath and bitter coughs. We tried to hide her, to lock away her contagion, but more came like moths to firelight. The sick and the dying flocked to us, the healthy fleeing and leaving the ill to die alone and unaided. Few remained with us, and those few were the tormented, sick in mind instead of body. They were the ones that first gave us the shadows and sent us to the lands of blood and bone, exiled us from our safe haven and sent us into the depths of madness.

Isn't it funny how a refuge can become a prison? Darkness was our friend, once. Now, it haunts us; no, they haunt us. They think with minds like our own, smile with rotting teeth and mold-crusted eyes, dance with our dead and lead them away. We sometimes dance with them, aid them to buy time for ourselves. Illness is a curse.

At least we will not die alone, here in these crumbling tunnels. Our children will bring the rest of Sorneith down with us, and the darkness will take us all. It is comforting to know that everyone will suffer, especially when our illness evolves to take the other species down as well. One day, it will happen.

hello o: I just rescued a dragon from a friend's dead lair, and it looks like her brother Elros shares her curse. Lillia is my first dragon with lore parents so this is neat and now I'm stalking her siblings XD
