"As We Define Want"
8407051.png

One cold night in the glowing mushroom gardens of Shadow's Wispwillow Grove, you stare into the night sky to admire the world and marvel at all the blessings the Great Shadowmother has bestowed on you. As you fixate on twilight, a dense grey fog slowly creeps into your vision and steals your attention from the starry canvas.

The fog surrounds you as you desperately try to focus your eyes to see about you. You slowly make your way by feeling the earth below your feet; if you could remember the trail you followed to find your way back to your lair. But then you freeze --- you hear movement and the flapping of many wings.

As you peer into the dense fog you make out what looks to be a light, only it wasn't direct light; more like, reflections. Reflections of a million shimmery scales floating in the misty air. Then you see slits of purple opening wider, and wider. A pair of big purple eyes stare back at you. They were intimidating, though not as frightening as they were enthralling.

"My, my..." A masculine voice spoke clearly through the mist, eerily soothing it seemed to be.
Determined to hold your ground, you look him straight back into his eyes and exclaimed, "What do you want?"

The voice giggled at you and said, "It's not about what I want. It's about what you want, isn't it?"

The eyes faded into the greyness of the fog. You hear his wings push against the wind. You watch the shimmering dark scales of an elongated body twirl and float and ascend into the fog.

Elegant. Gracious. Eerie.

Soft breezes grace your cheek and ribbons of the mist catch you off guard and spirals towards your face. You wave them away. You look up at the sky and notice the fog begin to regress... twilight returning to greet you with her stars.

That same giggle could be heard faintly in the distance. And out of the receding fog, a chest springs out nearly hitting your shoulders, but, you catch it! The body of a dark spiral reveals itself and flies away, disappearing into the darkness, laughing as he swoons along the currents.

You look at the chest cradled in your claws and you cautiously open to see its contents, barely paying mind to the little (____) playfully poking at your feet.

He wouldn't be so audacious as to call himself the very embodiment of shadows...but he would still call himself very shadowy by nature, anyway. He's always flitting about in the corner of another dragon's gaze, only to disappear in a flash of shimmering scales when they try to look, his smooth, deep laughter still echoing behind him. Yet he doesn't attempt to be too frightening; "unnerving" is perhaps a better word, reminding them all that he's as ever-present and enigmatic as the darkness between the stars, yet as alluring as the sweet flowers that surround (and even grow inside) their lair. His constant elegant flight keeps the eyes spellbound, his voice simultaneously soothes and draws the listener closer...and his shadowy magic ensures that those he doesn't want quite that close never even get a chance to touch him.

Thankfully, those aren't too common. It takes much to anger or perturb Inumbro, and no dragon in this clan has ever done it. Travelers, on the other hand...maybe once or twice. But that's over and done with, now...no need for anyone to worry over-much about it, and he's far more likely to find some way to help a weary wanderer than hinder them. If they need help, his guidance can lead them to the clan; if they're simply lost, he can use the intrigue he generates to draw them back to the familiar pathways; even if they're simply passing by, he can appear in the darkness of night, surrounded by fog and shadow, leaving behind a small gift as his ever-present quiet laughter fades into the distance.

Some would call him "bewitching", in the same way that a Janustrap bewitches its prey. But he feels the comparison to be unfair...

After all, he has no true malice towards others. Just amusement...and perhaps a bit of fascination of his own towards the dragons of the light.
