Did the Bossman really send you here? What's he expect me to do about this?

Dirge bit back a growl, hackles raising as the overhead lights blinked a bloody red. One paw shoved the goggles off his face and he glared at the other end of the room. A low, wailing siren started up.

By now it was a familiar occurrence. What was it this time? A gas leak? The incompetence of his peers? As he quickly capped the more volatile chemicals and neutralized the cocktail he was brewing, he was counting seconds. The warning system was calling for an evacuation, but he was not about to leave his station compromised. That would make things far worse.

From the adjacent room came the sound of shattering glass and muffled curses. He was tempted to stop in and see what was going on, but the blinking had stopped and the lights were a solid, demanding color.

They were out of time. A low rumble shook the ground, the low hiss of the containment procedure engaging spurring him into a scrambled sprint. Claws dug into the floor, the scraping, grating sound jolting its way up his limbs. If he hadn’t spent most of his life in the facility, he was sure he would have been hopelessly lost in the winding, crimson-tinted walls.

He was well into the lobby when the first of the metal doors slammed shut, sealing the lower labs. Though it was an impossible task, he tried not to notice the sounds of slamming paws on the other side.

There were half dozen creatures in the lobby, each sporting looks of irritation and disgruntlednes;- none of them looked particularly worried, and that eased some of the teenson in his soul.

A large wildclaw shambled over and glared down at him, lowering the clipboard in his hand. “Cutting it close there, aren’t you?”

Dirge frowned, shaking himself off. “Getting a bit familiar with the evac button there, boss?” It wasn’t too difficult to see Trammel's failing mood. And it was just as difficult to give into the impulse to nettle him. Just a little. He might have been grinning too wide, his eyes overbright.

The larger dragon hummed, eyes narrowing as he looked around. “Just a small containment breach this time.”

Blinking, Dirge scratched his chin, head tilting to one side. “We don’t do evacs for that, Boss.”

“Try telling that to those idiots down on floor three. No one reads the manuals anymore.” The clipboard clattered to the floor, the most telling proof of his irritation, catching the attention of all the room’s occupants. “I’ll get that later,” he muttered, a flush of color tinting his face. Behind him, his tail flicked on the ground. “Might as well get comfortable; we’ve got about an hour before the doors unlock.”

“More like two. I say we grab lunch.”

With a hum Trammel waved him off, “You go do that; not like you’ll be missing out on much. I have paperwork to get started on.”

Stretching out on the cold floor, Dirge let out a contented sigh. “Naaah. Too comfy now.”

Trammel glanced at him over the top of his glasses, amusement and irritation battling for dominance on his face. Back to normal, then. It was a much more agreeable look, he found.

There wasn’t much else to say and Trammel soon wandered back towards the rest of the group. His clawed hand flexed, sharp needles of pain shooting up his arms before the sensation faded back into their usual numbness.

There was no time to spare on his own discomfort. Damage control was underway. And someone was getting fired over this, he guaranteed it.

What are you doing here? I’m sure you’ve got work to get back to; heavens know with the orders filtering through… it’s enough to drive most of us insane. How in the world do they expect us to suddenly fix the shortage? I mean really.

Sorry… It’s not really professional to be complaining. You needed something, kid?

Well sure I can give you a rundown of the team. I keep forgetting you’re still pretty new ‘round here; you’ll get the hang of it soon enough. Not sure why you’re asking me, though.

If you really want to get an insider’s opinion, your best bet is Dolce. He’s the easily excitable skydancer. Mechanic and general-all-around handyman. Real sweetheart. Now I ain’t one to gush about family, but he’s got this “motherly” streak about him. Had it since we were kids and it’s definitely pulled us out of a few scrapes over the years. You know how that is with the famine still going strong; life’s rough for everyone. But yea. He knows more about everyone here than anyone. Don’t worry. Dolce ain’t got a mean bone in his body; he ain’t one to take advantage and I’ll fight anyone that says otherwise. There’ll be hell to pay for anyone trying to spread that slander.

Speaking of slander, you already know the Bossman, yea? Big goopy lookin’ wildclaw that likes to stand around tryin’ to be intimidating. Don’t listen to a word anyone outside our department says. They like running their gums far too much about things they don’t understand. Sure there’s a grain of truth to the gossip, but it’s so warped now it ain’t worth a lick of salt. I owe him far too much to let you think the worst of him. Trammel’s a big softie- don’t ever tell him I said that. I won’t be caught dead being nice; got a reputation to uphold, capiche?

Yea me and him go way back. Knew him since I was a kid. He's kinda been like a... dad to me and Dolce over the years. Heh. Kinda weird working for the guy now, but you get used to it after a while. We all got our idiosyncrasies; some of them weirder than others. The sooner you pick up on that, the better off you'll be. Just don’t blow up any equipment like his last apprentice-

Who Laius? Yea I knew him. You certainly won’t hear mention of him around here, if that’s what you’re asking. I think out of the maiden team me, Satax, and the Bossman are the only ones that stuck around after… the incident. Let’s just say Laius came out of that with far... less of himself and the Bossman ended up with a little bit... more. Best not to talk about someone who’s listening. Bossman gets real… particular when it’s mentioned. Real hush hush round here and the like.

Anyways.

Back to safer topics? Yeeah let’s do that.

You’ve already met Satax. He’s the head honcho the security. Big guy that walked ya through the safety protocols your first day. You should probably listen to what he’s got to say. If you want to leave here in the same condition you showed up in, of course. It’s a bit too late for most of us... B-but hey, no need to make his job more difficult than it already is, eh?

Oh man, you should totally ask him to tell you about the time we managed to turn some toxic sludge into a semi-sentient entity. That took ages to track down and neutralize. He was so steamed. It was almost funny to see him chew out the Bossman; not that he knew anything about it, though. Wasn’t exactly an on-the-books project, ya know? I think we were trying to find a way to recycle waste or something, but that backfired in the most spectacular of fashions. I managed to pack them up and ship them off to some neighboring clan before anyone got the idea to investigate.

We did manage to temporarily boost the empire’s food stores for a few months, though. And waste was at an all time low. So it weren't entirely a loss. Though I wouldn’t recommend trying to replicate the results.

It doesn’t stop Sero from trying to run the numbers. He’s got a good head on his shoulders for numbers and the like; good to have him on your side when you start running your own experiments and theories. Aside from you, he’s the newest member of the research team, so don’t expect him to be able to help out if you’re looking to get some dirt on anyone. Which I recommend you not do if you value all your limbs. Anywaaays. I think he and Satax are cousins or something? Maybe not. It’s hard to tell anymore; so few of us have family left. You'd probably be better asking him yourself.

H-hey… maybe you should get back to work or something?
