Adagio
Born in the Clarus Clan on September 30, 2015
Adagio was born as a beacon of hope and a promise for the future. Although she never knew it, her father had prophesied her birth and the changes she would bring to the coming age. But Dusk's visions soon turned sour, and Adagio's birth was no longer a cause for celebration but a cause for devastation. Perhaps it might have all worked out differently, if Dusk's fatal flaw hadn't been to ignore his daughter simply because the heavens advised him to. Adagio was an eager hatchling, proud of her parents and eager to please the Clan. She knew she was the founders' only child to remain within the Clan, and although she didn't know why - apart from the fact that she had not been called to serve the Gladekeeper - she was happy to live beneath the Willow. She would lead the Clan, she was sure, to a greater future. Sonata loved to spend time with her, teaching her to fly, catching insects together, and just enjoying each others' company. But after Dusk repeatedly turned down her cries for attention, Adagio felt her heart darken. Over time, Adagio grew to resent her parents. |

She learned from her music mentor, Melody, that her mother was harbouring a dark secret - a hidden past of a hypnotic song that had once caused Clans to banish Sonata, BeastClans to chase her away from their territory. Sonata was clever to hide the secret song, but Adagio grasped the secret like a lifeline. The young thistle-and-chocolate would bring about ruin for her parents. Working through the shadows, Adagio won the loyalty of the old priest Sarako, who vowed to help Adagio return the Clan to the Gladekeeper's glory. ""Things have gotten out of claw,"" the Imperial grumbled one dark night, low enough only for the Fae wrapped around his antlers to hear. |

It was not long before Adagio and Sarako were able to bring their plan to fruition. It started with the murder of the Clan's medic, Khseraf, who stood up to the priest. ""The Gladekeeper would not permit such an act of betrayal,"" Khseraf warned Sarako as Adagio looked on, but there was no hope for the Pearlcatcher. Sarako swiftly killed her where she flew. Adagio knew then that there was no turning back, but she was not daunted by the task before them. Sarako began preaching against the Clan's matriarch. This earned him some followers, with Adagio supervising. What they really wanted was the Clan not to turn to them, but to turn against Sonata. As the coup continued, Sonata was unable to keep control over her Clan. Adagio knew the rumours she started about her mother were untrue, but the Clan was enraged, not knowing who to trust, who to side with. The chaos around the Willow grew to be too much, and brawls broke out, fights erupting between dragons who had days ago been closest companions. Without Khseraf to heal the injured, more weakened. Some died - the hoard keeper, Adagio's half-sister Svanda. Finally, it was time for Sarako's grand maneuver: attacking the necromancer during a delicate ritual. A battle broke out among the Clan for the right to lead, with many unsure of who was worth following. Loyalty to Sonata fractured and broke. Adagio watched the dragons fight tooth and claw for her mother's Clan, and while blasting magic into the fray, she did not regret any of it. All went well, until it did not. Sarako slipped from the battle. After a brief confrontation with her mother, Adagio followed the priest to the scene of the sacrifice of the Guardian Grove. This had been Sarako's idea, for they were some of the most outspoken supporters for the matriarch, and he was happy to offer these lives to the Gladekeeper. The Guardian Grove had been a collective of Guardians born on a special holiday, one which took place only ever quarter century. They had been training to serve the Gladekeeper directly as some of her highest soldiers, meaning they knew the truth of the matter. Adagio would not let these untimely nobles ruin her plot. And so they had to be killed. But Adagio had been unaware of this plot. And seeing Sarako murder these dragons made her realize Sarako had never been on her side, either. She couldn't care less for the lost Grove, but she certainly was devastated to lose her companion, her partner. Adagio disappeared into the forest before Sarako could see her, before anyone could catch her. After the Guardian Grove massacre, the tide turned against the coup. After the matter, Adagio heard what had happened once she had left: The Clan's Guild of Thorns were able to take down Sarako while he was mid-prayer over the murdered carcasses of the Guardians. The Clan's warriors, still loyal to Sonata, executed Sarako at sundown and scattered pieces of his corpse throughout the forest to avoid the dangers of Emperors. The Imperial Melody fled the Clan, afraid of what would happen to her - one of Sonata's closest friends, Adagio's mentor, and the reason that Sonata's song had been uncovered. Dragons were quick to take after Melody and abandon the Clarus Clan; only the strongest and most loyal remained. Sonata was unable to recover her public image after the scandal, but Adagio would not be the one to take her place - and she did not care. She did not want to rule the Clan, only to bring about its destruction. Cloaking herself, she arrived on the edge of a neighbouring Clan's territory. |

The Clan Nucifera took her in and offered her shelter. Here she remained for a while, becoming close companions with the Clan's prince, Nanner. This time, Adagio had no ulterior motives. She merely wanted to put the past behind her and enjoy a quiet, private life. When she and Nanner discovered that the Gladekeeper had blessed them with one egg, a surge of guilt overwhelmed Adagio. She could not bring a child into this world. What kind of parent would she be, when she had destroyed her own mother's life? There was no remorse for having destroyed Sonata's life - only for having tainted her own future as a mother. In confidence, Adagio told Nanner a half-truth. "I am from the Clarus Clan, over by the great Willow. I ran away because I have committed unspeakable sins. There is no hope for me there, but I do not want the same life for our child. Please, promise you will care for her, no matter what happens." She paused. "Do not let her take the same path that I have chosen." That was the last night Adagio saw Nanner. She went for an early morning flight the next day, and was subsequently caught by her birth Clan. The scout Oshkana and the warrior Snarl were quick to disenchant Adagio and chain her up. "You are wanted back at camp," Oshkana gruffly told the Fae. She was brought home in rough hands and thrown into a new prison made especially for her from the Willow's wood by Ashlesha, Sonata's second and the Willow's Guardian. Adagio knew she would not be killed. Not here, not by her mother. But she would not be let free, either. She would live out the remainder of her days here, within the prison of her birth Clan. Without the love of her mate, without ever seeing her daughter, she was alone, with only the Willow's warm bark to keep her company. Adagio sighed, singing quietly to herself to pass the time. So be it - she would just wait for someone else to listen to her song... |
