Hephaestus was always mercilessly teased about his genes, even more so than his two other sisters who share the unruly combination of ripple, seraph, and crackle. The litter was born with beautiful colours and would have been the envy of every lair mother, but alas, they all received the ugliest genes imaginable. Although the dragons all joked about the litter, they never realized the sting of their words. The seemingly endless remarks tore Hephaestus apart, ruining his self-esteem. The only dragons who never spoke of Hephaestus in any ill manner were his parents, sisters, and the healer dragon who urged the sad coatl to visit other lairs. Sornieth has all kinds of dragons, Hephaestus. Yes, some can be cruel, but there are also many kind spirits out there. Go and experience the world, little one. We will be waiting for you. Hephaestus felt his heart swell with emotions and swallowed back the nervous tension. Those words rang through Hephaestus' hopeful mind as he bid farewell to his clan, his sisters, and home. With a parting gift of a violet deepsea bulb to light his way and a pretty buttercup neck bow to help him feel pretty, his lair wished him good wishes. No matter how horrible he'd felt in the clan, it was still home and he would miss it dearly. Hephaestus found it very interesting to speak to such different dragons than the ones of his homeland. He made fast friends with a fae named Vali. His new friend was quite happy to show him around the lair and make sure Hephaestus felt comfortable in his temporary home. After a few days, Hephaestus admitted his insecurity. Vali had simply scoffed at the notion, and for a moment Hephaestus thought he was going to be teased again. He was surprised when Vali said, "That doesn't matter. You shouldn't be ashamed of what you can't help, ya hear? I can't do any magic. Does that make me a lesser dragon?" Of course not, Hephaestus had responded. Why would it? Vali smirked at that before leaving the room, letting it sink in. A few days later, Hephaestus was readying to leave. The clan was nice, but he wasn't sure if he could take the weather. Vali had dashed out moments before Hephaestus took off and handed him something small and yellow. A bow, that matched the one given to him at home. "Consider it a departure gift," Vali said with a grin. "Keep your head up, alright? Farewell!" When he made it to the clan, his self-consciousness flared up again. He just stuck out like a sore thumb against all of these purple, blue, and generally dark dragons. Sure, there were a couple out of the ordinary, but he still felt detached. He prepped himself to leave, even though he had only just gotten here, and after the lesson from the nice far of his previous resting place, he didn't want to stay any longer. Just as he was about to head up the narrow passageway to the surface, a nocturne with a wizard hat and a guardian child popped out of seemingly nowhere. "Sorry I wasn't there to greet you when you first got here, Artemis here is a new arrival and it's fallen to me to take care of him. I'm Amity, nice to meet you!" Hephaestus was too shocked to respond. These two were so far from the norm of the lair that he couldn't quite process it. Allowing Amity to lead him back towards the center of the lair, she explained how she had been taken in when she was just a hatchling. "When you live in darkness, what you look like doesn't much matter. And anyway, I like what you look like, it reminds me of the glowshrooms!" After talking to Amity and Artemis for a while longer, he got to know the rest of the clan better. Although a bit cold, Hephaestus still being a stranger and all, they did as best they could to keep him well fed and happy. But, before long he felt the urge to move again. These dragons still didn't seem to want him to stay there forever, and he didn't think he could get used to the darkness as well as the rest of them. Before he left, Amity came up to him, much like Vali did when he left the last clan, and brought him a bracelet made of darksteel with some dark stone set in it. "Don't forget us. It may not be quite like the bows you came here with, but I still think you'll like it. You're great, and don't you ever forget it!" She set it on his foreleg, backing off and biding him good luck on his travels.
Hephaestus's next stop was one completely opposite of Shadow, he had reached a lair of Light. A gigantic Gaurdian eyed him suspiciously as he entered, but did nothing to stop him as he went inside. The clan was small, but had a lot of variety to its occupants, ranging from a cool blue to a violent red on a female Tundra, who lumbered right up to him. "Hello," She said warmly, "I'm Faira. Don't mind Dereon, our leader, he's always on the lookout for bad dragons. Definitely not yourself though." He was scared that she would mention his bizarre markings. "I love your coat markings!" She said however,"Far more unique and intriguing then mine!"
After a few days in the warm Light lair, Hephaestus had met Faira's best friend Fawkes, a friendly but somewhat cocky dragon, and had even spoken to Dereon once or twice. The other dragons who called the Light Flight home were very welcoming, but he could feel that it would be time to take his leave once more. He went to say his goodbyes to Faira, with which she smiled and handed him a small but beautiful Teardrop Lapis Lazuli Armlet. "Good luck on your travels," she said, "Take this with you, as a memory." With that, she placed it on his arm and sent him on his way. Hephaestus was accepted into the lair with open arms, as if he grew up here. Solstice, a new friend of Hephaestus, introduced him to the Guardians and Trainers of the clan, Pollux and Coal. Hephaestus was taught how to fight and protect himself from any unexpected danger he may encounter in the future. Hephaestus made many new friends in the lair during his stay. A feast was held in honour of Hephaestus being the first visitor the Leta clan had and was given an Aquamarine Flourish Necklace as a memory of his stay. All the clan members were sad to see Hephaestus go, but made sure he was welcome to come back anytime he liked. After many days spent talking with and getting to know the dragons he'd found himself with Hephaestus decided it was time to set out once again into the world. During his stay he hung out with SeaWanderer who taught him the fine art of fishing and bragged about his sea conquests (who were all just rare shells with treasure in them). When it was time to leave, Hephaestus was given more seafood than he could carry and a small intricate net so that he could catch his own dinner during his travels. After clearing up any misunderstandings, Merric and Orisa happily invited Hephaestus inside to stay for a few days. He got to meet another coatl named Aether. Aether loved Hephaestus' intricate patterns, and was the one to show him around the area (And protect him from any animals out on the wasteland.) While exploring the nearby lakes, Hephaestus accidentally fell onto a Poisonous Toridae! Injured, the two coatls rushed back to the lair so that Orisa could heal him in time. The creature was obviously scared, shocked, and concerned, so it followed. It awaited outside to make sure that Hephaestus was going to be okay, and didn't leave his side after that. Aether pointed out it's colors, noting that a few of them were closely matched. Maybe Hephaestus wasn't an ugly duckling at all, at least in his new friend's eyes. |
