Biography

Clan role: Source of ancient knowledge and protector and seeing-eye help to her blind mate, Marrain.

When you lose yourself, it is not always impossible to find yourself again. Though it may take its time.

Brackish's early life was a happy and hopeful one. Her childhood was fishing in the rivers, making "golems" out of piles of rock, romping through the forest, and napping under the shade of the trees when she got all tuckered out. When she grew up and prepared to start The Search, she was excited, daydreaming about what her purpose might be every passing day. She wandered the world, beholding many beautiful sights and wonders that struck her with awe. But each and every time, she felt no connection. This was not her Charge. Perhaps over the next hill, or through the next valley, she would find it...

It could take a Guardian decades to find their charge, she knew. She began to remind herself this every day. It takes time, that's all. It's out there somewhere. I just haven't found it yet.

But as the decades rolled by, those words began to feel stale and hollow. Guardians far younger than she were stepping up to protect their Charges already. But no matter where she looked, there seemed to be nothing for her. Growing listless and weary of heart, she began to wander aimlessly, feeling ashamed that she could not even find a purpose.

One evening, while wandering through the forests once more, she stumbled upon the Driftwood Clan. Sensing that she was weary from ages of travels, they convinced her to rest for a while in the shelter of their woods. She took up residence in an empty lair temporarily, and watched as the hatchlings played, the friendly Beastclan allies taught new crafts to their dragon companions, and as Ocha made yet another pot of tea. After a few weeks of rest and bolstering her spirits, she said her goodbyes. The clan was welcoming and had its charms, but what she was looking for was not here. She was desperate to finally find what she was looking for.

Her travels brought her through The Tangled Wood, to the border it shared with The Scarred Wasteland. The Plague realm was a far cry from the verdant jungles she loved, but though she had wandered through it before, perhaps this time...

She was about to strike out again for the border, but something caught her attention. There was a faint rustle underneath the pines beside her. Her instincts initially braced her for an attack by an unnoticed foe, or a startled potential meal. A Shadow dragon attempting to play a trick on her, even. But when she peered under the branches, there lay a Plague dragon, a small Mirror. No - from nose to tail, he was actually fairly long, and he had a good wingspan, too. But he was...

"Who's there?" the Mirror called out in a faint voice. The rest of his rail-thin body, reduced to mere skin and bones, remained still.

"A friend," Brackish responded. "I'm not going to hurt you. I know this is probably a stupidly obvious question, but... are you okay? Do you need help?"

The Mirror lay still for a moment before answering in a soft voice: "I don't know if you can tell, as I presume it's dark. My feet and my ears tell me that this is The Tangled Wood. But you see - heh - my pack had a run-in with a group of Serthis one day when we were out hunting. Some of them carry strange potions, you know? Well, one of them was using something that burned my eyes, all four of them. I can't see anymore. I fell behind, and lost track of the pack, and without the use of my smaller eyes I can't seem to catch anything. I don't know how I managed to wander into this place. But I don't have the energy to keep going anymore. If you want to help me, I won't stop you. I don't exactly have the strength to fight you off, so do what you want with me."

Brackish's claws dug into the earth beneath her. He's starving to death! a voice screamed in her thoughts. Suddenly, moving almost without thought, she reached into her travel pack and extracted a piece of cured meat. She held it out to the Mirror. "Here, I have some food on me. Eat, get your strength up."

The Mirror took the strip between his teeth, and started to gnaw, saliva dribbling out the side of his mouth. But before long, the jaw became still, only his tongue lapping at the tough meat. He didn't even have the strength to chew it up.

He needs far more help than this, Brackish realized. I need to take him somewhere safe, somewhere I can cook up some broth and watch over him...

"I'm lifting you up onto my back," she warned him. "Try not to move too much. I'm going to take you somewhere safe." After wrapping him tight against her back with cloth strips to keep him from falling, Brackish took off into the dark sky. He just needed to last a little longer...
