xxxxxxxxxxxx Sometimes, the sky called to him. He could see it outside his window, clouds idly drifting across that wide blue expanse.

It was like a whole other world up there. Something so magical that only a select few could ever see. Wind dragons, mostly, and their amazing flying machines. Not Shadow dragons with their gloom and doom. Not Arcane dragons in a Shadow lair, huddled beneath that ever present veil of darkness, trying to catch a glimpse of pale blue beneath the thick cover of brambles and thorns.

"You can leave, you know," Ambra said, flitting through their lair, barely sparing him a glance where he sat forlornly staring out the window. "Really, no one's forcing you to stay here."

It wasn't all that easy though, to just pack up everything and leave. For one, how would he get there? He hadn't the supplies, nor the treasure, to fund an expedition. He certainly couldn't carry everything he owned on his back, which meant he'd have to rent a cart. Not to mention the perilous journey through Plague territory, or somehow rafting over Water's depths, all in the hopes that maybe Wind would be better? What were even the chances that he'd like it there? What if there weren't any lairs open, or he couldn't find a spot to settle? What if he ended up homeless and on the streets, unable to feed himself and having to sell off all his worldly possessions just to survive?

What if he never even made it there in the first place?

"No," Lou said after a moment, turning away from his window and sighing. The darkness was too omnipresent today. There was no glimpse of anything remotely colorful outside except for the glowshrooms and the dark flickers of shadows. "I'm okay here."

Besides, Lou had his roommate ("Wife," some peopled said in the streets. "Mate," said others. But their relationship had always been borne more from necessity than want. Someone to stave away the loneliness, to wake up next to on cold winter days. Never romance and sparks, no matter how some dragons imagined it), and his child (His adult child who no longer visited him, despite living in the same lair. Off on her very own adventures that didn't involve her father any longer.).

Everything he knew was here, and everything he needed. And that worked well enough for him.

Lou's a downer. He's the type of person who dreams and never goes out and does it. He'll talk about it nonstop though. All about how he plans to do this or do that, or see this or see that, and he'll never do it. It's not the right time, not the right season, not the right moment. The real reason he won't do anything is fear. He fears that he'll fail and that's all anyone will say of him. "Oh, remember that Lou, how he talked on and on about his big ol' dreams. Look at him now. Poor sap, couldn't even make it for a week before it all came crashing down around him."

He fears that he'll never accomplish anything in life, that he'll be forgotten, that he'll just be a footnote at the end of history, a, "Hey, remember this guy? Yeah, me neither. Who even was he?" He fears that he'll never be good enough, that all his dreams are just that, dreams.

In the end, Lou's holding himself back, and he doesn't even know it.

"Oh, remember that Lou? Poor sap. Couldn't even try it once before he threw in the towel."

H i s t o r y
Lou hailed from the Starfall Isles, and his journey through Plague was the absolute worst time of his life. 0/10, would not recommend again. Sometimes he still has nightmares about it, and yeah, sure, plenty of dragons call Plague their home, but nope. A thousand times, nope. Once he finally crossed the border and made it into Shadow, Lou just about collapsed from relief, because thank you, but no thanks. Never again.

It took him a bit to acclimate to the eternal darkness, but Lou got used to it and it helped that he met Theia. Theia, who wormed her way into his life, and Theia, who he had a child with, and Theia, who eventually ripped his heart out of his chest and stomped on it, taking her and their child out of his life without so much as a by your leave.

Lou insists that he's over her, that it was nothing, that they're better off without each other. And they definitely are better off without each other. But sometimes he misses her, or he wakes up, the other side of the bed cold and empty, and Lou feels hollow inside.

It kind of made sense that Ambra and Lou ended up drawn together. Two misfits in this lair of chaos. Both unwanted and thrown away. Or, rather, Lou was unwanted and thrown away. Ambra was more akin to something someone put outside so it wouldn't stink up their house. Either way, here they were, lonely, in need of someone to talk to, to hang out with, and they slotted together. Not perfectly, never perfectly. But a circle in a square hole is still better than nothing.

Theia divorced Lou. If dragon divorces exist when they never got married in the first place. Mostly, Theia just up and took everyone one day, turned their kid against him, and left. Never mind that she tore out everything he loved. Never mind that she just destroyed his entire world. She didn't even look back, never called or left Christmas cards. It certainly didn't help that their daughter, Lyneth, took Theia's side. Oh sure, Lyneth tried at first to make it work, but it just wasn't possible. Family dinners were tense and hostile, even just mentioning the other parent's name led to either waterworks or shouting matches. Eventually, Lyneth got tired of being the messenger bird between two warring countries, and just set off on her own. She still makes sure to visit her parents every now and then (She's not totally heartless), it's just a bit of a shock to go from seeing your daughter every day to suddenly only once a year.

When Ambra showed up, it was kind of a miracle. Lou had just resigned himself to spending the rest of his life alone when Ambra put up a sign that said, "Roommate wanted." And Lou thought, "Wow, I need one of those." And yes, Ambra's a bit of a jerk, and yes, Ambra's kind of annoying and possibly OCD, but it was something at least. They learned to skirt around each other and their habits, to roll their eyes and just accept the other dragon, flaws and all. It's not romantic, mostly because Lou still harbors feelings over the dragon who dumped him, and Ambra because she's never had an interest in such things. But it works. Sometimes they share a room, sometimes a bed, sometimes one of them sleeps on the couch with no questions asked. It's amicable, it's nice. Ambra's there for him whenever he starts spiraling, and Lou's there for her whenever she needs to rant about something (which is almost always).
