Erigone

Errand Runner, Anti-Magic Sorcerer

Definitely not shady. Nothing to see here.

ol4F6Vi.png Most dragons can’t enter or exit the Runic Mountain Range, but Erigone has the uncanny ability to somehow bypass the range’s Drowste Maze spell, enabling him to transport dragons in and out of the mountain range. Of course, there isn’t much that he can do to stop the range from dragging those dragons back or kicking them out, but at least for a brief period of time, he is able to neutralise the Drowste Maze’s hold on a dragon, much to the relief of those who feel like keeping up with what’s going on with the rest of the world.

He uses his ability most often for Nagara so the merchant can go out, trade, and breathe fresh air before inevitably being dragged back and tossed rudely in Myrtle’s face. He also uses this ability to pick up newspapers for Demeter weekly. While he’s not quite sure why she keeps asking him for newspapers despite the fact she rarely reads them, Erigone’s also not the kind to question her orders, and so he does it, much to the dismay of those who are targets of Demeter’s fearsome roll of newspapers.

Most of the time, though, he stays in the clan and helps out wherever and whenever he can. He is one of the few dragons who doesn’t directly work for one of the four clan leaders, and instead equally helps all four of them. (Well, the ones he can help, anyway. Nobody’s quite ever sure what Kraken’s doing in his corner over there.) Demeter calls for his help most often, seeing as she has the most to do, so Erigone can usually be found running errands for her, or helping with the clan defenses while Pachetonas and Isfet argue in the background. He is responsible for the clan’s defensive shields, which cancel out the majority of magical attacks anyone may launch towards the lair. It would be great if those could also cancel out the explosions that happen inside the lair, but he’s an anti-magic sorcerer, not a miracle worker.

Despite specialising in anti-magical spells, Erigone knows a surprising amount about magic. Thus, he also serves as an instructor of sorts, along with Harmony, whenever someone needs magical lessons. To make sure dragons will still be able to find what they’re looking for even if he’s not around to help, he’s penned a number of books on magic, much to the delight of Valenya, who has a special section in the library for them.

WRTHpQQ.png After reading the Braille version of those books, Mythic remarked that some of the things Erigone’s written are from the Observatory’s top-secret archives. The clan should probably send someone to investigate, being honourable dragons of morals and rules and ethics (*cough cough cough*), but so far, anyone who’s been asked to has claimed that they’re too busy.

When he’s not running errands, Erigone usually helps Kavleyn with the hatchlings, or at the very least, keeps Kavleyn’s snake Asdfghjkl out of trouble when the Spiral deals with the hatchlings. While Erigone doesn’t have a snake of his own and doesn’t really plan to (he swears all the snakes in the lair are in on a conspiracy or something), he is rather fond of Asdfghjkl and has accepted the boa’s offers of archery lessons. The archery gear he wears are solely for this purpose, and he’s gotten quite good at shooting things, though he’ll probably never be able to use handle a bow with just his tail like Asdfghjkl.

The two spend a lot of time shooting arrows either in the Scale's training stadium or Kavleyn's den. The arrows are made of the highest quality, made with feathers stolen from Nanshe and knitting needles "borrowed" from Kerendia.

(Kavleyn regrets introducing the two.)

Being Hathor’s mate, Erigone also spends a considerable amount of time helping her, though he’ll never quite understand what she needs all of her paperwork for. As far as he’s concerned, most of the dragons in this lair can’t read anyway, or they’d stay out of the places labeled clearly “STAY OUT” and stop getting themselves blown up. It’s important to her, though, so he tries to support however he can. But he will recycle those papers when she’s not looking because honestly. In a clan so far removed from everything else, there’s no need for paperwork.

(Recycling her paperwork doesn’t seemed to have affected how the clan’s being run, so it’s interesting as to what Hathor’s putting on paper.)

Erigone is the only dragon in the lair (and maybe the world) who is capable of consuming Hathor's cooking without throwing up, dying, or throwing up and then dying. Considering even a fellow Plague dragon like Vespera ended up in a coma after trying Hathor's food (it made next week's headlines), this is a tremendouss feat.

He is the father of Haukin and Arete, and also not very good at fathering them. He does his best. Really, he does. But there’s no good way to tell Haukin he should stop helping others for fear he collapse in the hallway one day, and dealing with Arete is something that nobody can really do. Still, he tries, and though he more often embarrasses the two or not, they both appreciate his efforts and offers of apology cookies.

Not much is known about Erigone’s past, but everyone’s too embroiled in their own matters to care much. There is a bit of contradiction to what he says about his background, though. He says he was born in the Observatory. He has Plague eyes. He says he has no powers. He can neutralise magic. He says he knows nothing about the Shade…

He’s still, unsurprisingly, one of the more trustworthy dragons in this lair.

~~

Once upon a time, the goddess of darkness summoned the Shade.

Not the massive entity itself, but a small piece of its ripped shadow. A Shade Sprite, she called it, and the malicious goddess used the forbidden black magic extracted from it to her will. With the Shade Sprite, she created spells that should have never existed - spells of immortality, spells of possession, and most fearsome of all, the Shade spell that could animate the shadow of any entity, god or dragon, and consume all their magic and soul.

With every spell she casted, every bit of magic she expanded, the boundaries between her and the Shade Sprite blurred. Soon, she was no longer using another's magic, but her own, as she had become one with the Shade Sprite.

However, this coming together had unforeseen consequences. The Shade Sprite, when first summoned, had no conscious. It was naught but a shadow of magic, a reservoir of energy for its wielder to use as she choose. But when it bound itself to the goddess, it became forming something like a conscious, a personality. It began to feel, to perceive, and think for itself. It began using its magic to understand the world around it. From the goddess' mind, it learned of magic and of Sornieth, of dragons and of gods.

Knowledge is power, and power is dangerous. It was not long before the Shade Sprite decided to do what the goddess had done to it - control her.

Some things are easier said than done. Others are easier done than said. Then there are the things done without being said, and those are the things one usually doesn't end up getting away with.

It wasn't difficult for the Shade Sprite to begin altering the thoughts in its host's mind. The dark goddess was compelled to do things she'd never thought of doing, yet she did not sense anything out of place. For black magic was corrosive and seductive, and it was hard even for the goddess that ruled over it to sense it turn against her. Hungering to see what the outside world might be like, the Shade Sprite bade the dark goddess to open passageway into the Dark Realm where she ruled.

Its first fatal mistake. The dark goddess did not allow outside interference for a very good reason - there was a dragon champion sent by the gods who hunted her, one who had suffered by the hands of the goddess long ago. By opening the Dark Realm, the Shade Sprite unknowingly opened the window for retribution, and the revenge came swiftly.

Her name was Miracle, the champion of the gods, and she was invincible. Filled with powers from all eleven dragon deities, she chased the Shade Sprite and its host to the far reaches of the continent. Desperate to escape, the Shade Sprite forced its host to weave a spell of isolation to warp the space around them so that Miracle could not enter.

But it was too late. Miracle attacked, and half-way through the spell, the Shade Sprite was defeated. The dark goddess was killed, and the Shade Sprite dragged out from her body. In midst of an unfinished spell, Miracle's own magic, and the Shade Sprite's dark energy, the fabric of space was twisted beyond repair.

Not that it even slowed Miracle down.

"Please die," she said.

And the Shade Sprite died.

But not entirely.

What immortal part of it remained and was sealed by Miracle in an ancient artefact, then left it in the claws of a nearby clan who swore to guard it forever. For decades and eons, the Shade Sprite slumbered in half-life, trapped, deprived of movement, and believing that it would never again roam the world.

As time passed, the guardian clan was destroyed. The artefact was buried under soil for centuries before finally being unearthed by a curious Fae. Being an Arcanite, the Fae took the artefact back to the Observatory, where its companion awaited. They saw that the artefact glowed with dark magic similar to the Shade's, and true to their father's legacy, they decided to unleash it.

They were expecting a giant entity that they could control to their will. What they got was a ripped shadow, a substance of darkness that could barely even form a consciousness. The Shade Sprite, determined not to be imprisoned again, tried to speak to them in its ancient language, but they feared it; scorned it; angered it. And in its fury, the Shade Sprite attacked them.

The Sprite was not at full power, for only a small shred of its original power remained, and this tiny shard had been implemented into a bulky body created by the Fae that slowed its movements to a point where it was almost suffocating. Furious and frightened, the Shade thrashed about, craving destruction, only to be stopped by a bright glow that all but vaporised it:

The Eleventh Deity, God of Magic, the Arcanist.

On that day, the Shade Sprite died entirely.

On that day, a corrupted soul was given new life.

You can see the darkness as an ally
For the lack of light can engulf the world
But understand you can’t befriend the shadows
If you seek only to use them as a tool

And you might say that the dark is a nightmare
Or you can say it’s a dream come true
But in the end, it’s your own ambition
And your greed that ends up corrupting you

You can’t say that the darkness is evil
If you’re the own who lost your own heart
For you are responsible for your tragedies -
Don’t blame all your flaws on the silent dark

I pity those who look towards the light
As a banner of good the dark must despise
For if you think dark and light control your fate
You carve the path to your demise.
