Personality and Backstory by ZincAlloy

When it comes to things that are worthless, dirt is a contender to the throne. Some Earth dragons may claim to have some sort of special soil, and Nature dragons recognize that it is necassary for plants to grow, but none will try to pretend that an ordinary clawful of dirt has any real value. So, if a guardian's charge happens to be a patch of dirt, what does that say about the dragon?

As far as Myrtle's concerned — absolutely nothing.

Of course, Myrtle holds this opinion because her own search turned up nothing but a plot of dirt the size of her foot. It's not even quality dirt — it's dry, rocky, and plants have a habit of dying if you even consider planting them in it. To make matters worse, as it happens to actually be the ground, other dragons will unknowingly trample it if not explicitly told not to on threat of being made into a footpath themselves.

Other dragons, such as the combined population of the Aequitas Clan. Guardians should know better than to let their charge out of their sight, but after settling down near her charge and planting an orchard and multiple gardens, she'd become lax in her duties. Driving off the harpies that had been raiding her orchard seemed important at the time, especially compared to staring at some dirt that had never once done anything interesting. By the time Myrtle had returned from her counter-raid, the Aequitas Clan had set up shop in her stead. Not only had they stolen her home, but they had the gall to use her charge as their doormat!

Always the diplomatic sort, Myrtle quickly demanded that the encroaching clan remove their faces from her sight, or she'd remove them from their bodies. The diplomat from Clan Aequitas refused, saying that they rather liked this completely unsettled place and its conveniently pre-planted fruits and vegetables, before chowing down on one of Myrtle's heirloom blood oranges. This meant war, and Myrtle was more than eager to spill blood. Unfortunately, Clan Aequitas were rather violent themselves, and so the Runic Mountain Range played host to highly destructive but ultimately ineffective battles for weeks.

When the dust finally settled, Myrtle had been forced to surrender. Not due to her own injuries, but because one of the Aequitas dragons was holding an axe to the trunk of her favourite fruit tree. However, instead of disposing of Myrtle, the Aequitas dragons decided that they had a use for her. Demeter and Kraken specifically, having taken pity on the guardian with delusions of having any claim to the area.

And so, Myrtle was enlisted as the guardian of Clan Aequitas. She wasn't offered any payment beyond a promise to shift the clan a couple of metres to the left and away from her charge, but that's really all she wanted anyways. Now that she's grown a solid wall of thorn bushes three metres deep around it, they couldn't move back even if they wanted to. Myrtle keeps a thorny personality as well, sharp enough that most dragons want to keep much more than three meters away from her. To those brave enough to go near her, she will trade all the fruits and vegetables that she grows for interesting things, whenever those courageous souls can be bothered to remember they're not actually allowed to just steal them. A quick swing of a hoe that just barely misses crushing their skull is usually enough to jog their memory.

To this day she still plants vegetables and fights beastclans, while occasionally fighting vegetables and planting what's left of the beastclans when things get out of hand. (She'd appreciate it if Muffin was never allowed to put carrots in her cauldron again.) Presumably she does other things, but she's normally in a poor enough mood to ward off anyone interested in finding out what those things are. And if she's in a good mood, that's even worse! Whatever reason Myrtle has for cackling so much while tilling the soil is also a very good reason to be somewhere else.

While she is officially guardian of Clan Aequitas, mostly she's just guardian of her garden, and Clan Aequitas happens to be conveniently located behind said garden. But much to her dismay, there's some things Myrtle isn't allowed to keep out of her garden, such as dragons travelling by portal. It turned out ley-lines are great for both magical travel and growing crops along them, and so sometimes instead of nourishing rain falling from the sky, it rains dragons. And since Demeter has said she isn't allowed to behead (let alone injure) intruders, she's working on improvising. A bit of nature magic here, some selective pollination there, and soon all of her crops will be growing protective thorns sure to ruin every traveller's day. She's considered making the vegetables spiky as well, but the flavour of blood as they tear holes in your mouth might make them somewhat unpleasant to eat.

One dragon who hasn't decided to stay far away from Myrtle for their own safety is Astraea. (Though this just might be because she's incapable of remembering to stay away.) Surprisingly, Myrtle doesn't seem to mind the company. She even attempts to teach the nocturne about the importance of preserving things, instead of recklessly risking everything in the usual arcane pursuit of knowledge. Unfortunately, Astraea's curse of forgetfulness means those lessons won't be preserved, but on the other hand she's always overjoyed at being offered fresh fruit for the first time.

Another annoying visitor (of the more permanent sort) is the tree boa which has decided to sun itself around one of her horns. Myrtle should be thankful that her head such is such a great spot to bask in sunlight that it has attracted such a wonderful snake, but she just doesn't see it that way. As she sees it, the irritating green thing would be finding a new home deep underground if it wasn't tangentially useful. Snakes do eat some of the more bothersome garden pests, and this one's actually intelligent enough to fetch her gardening tools for her! Though whether it's good at finding tools or Myrtle is just good at throwing it at tools is still to be determined.
