B I O G R A P H Y

Sunriser was used to not having many friends, if at all. She had spent her babyhood alone, as she had been the only hatchling in her clan’s nursery for a long time. She played on her own and made friends with all the elders in the clan. They left her alone when they all passed. Her other clanmates only spoke to her when necessary or just out of politeness. She was a beautiful coatl with a beautiful voice, so why did no one want to be her friend?

She suspected it might be some problem with herself she didn’t know about. But she rarely spoke and never got in anyone’s way, so what problem could it possibly be? The two friends she had made in her adolescence had slowly distanced themselves until they barely looked at her in passing. They never mentioned why. Was she boring? Was Sunriser just not . . . enough for their standards? She didn’t understand.

She figured her home clan didn’t want much to do with her, so she left. She flew to the edge of the Ashfall Waste and crossed into the Windswept Plateau. It didn’t take her long to love the smell of bamboo and rush of wind up he nostrils when she inhaled. It didn’t take her long to meet Beryl, either. The two first encountered each other at a ramen shop in the middle of a clan of crazy tents and caves. It didn’t take long for Sunriser to find the best companion in Beryl.

_Friend Bracelets_

____Sunriser watched her home clan of coatls gathered in the center of the camp. They were mingling, humming their laughter and chattering about trivial matters. Sunriser stood at the edge of the crowd, orange wings folded to make herself seem smaller. She didn’t understand why the clan celebrated such old traditions--the Friendship Festival was never happy for everyone. She liked to hope so, anyway.

Sunriser watched dragons seek each other out in the crowd and exchange homemade bracelets. She watched her two friends, who claimed they were her best friends, give each other bracelets and then proceed to the dining clearing for the feast. Sunriser sighed. Another year had gone by without a bracelet adorning her own wrist. Well, she didn’t much like jewelry anyway. She slinked back to her nest and tried to block out the sound of the clan's distant cheerful laughter.

____Upon hearing this tale, Beryl flapped her wings in anger at Sunriser’s so-called friends. She disappeared for the rest of the day, and Sunriser was glad the tavern wouldn’t open since Beryl didn’t show up then either. Sunriser curled up in her nest, alone once again but not lonely, and fell asleep waiting for Beryl to return.

The next morning, Sunriser awoke early to hear a bustle of dragons in the tavern next to the nest she shared with Beryl. She entered the tent and was shocked to see her new clanmates sliding bracelets onto each others’ wrists. Before Sunriser could escape--because surely she wouldn’t receive one this time either--Beryl stepped in front of her, holding a little bracelet carved with bones out for her. The others went silent. Realizing what this meant, Sunriser stuck out her arm rather ungracefully and accepted the gift. The dragons gave a hearty cheer, toasting the new mates.
