B I O G R A P H Y

Telling fortunes and predicting the future were two completely different arts. For Yanira, all she had to do to invoke the future was just be hit with a vision. For Ziggy, however, he had to invoke the fortunes he sold by messing around with a deck of cards. Not that he did so begrudgingly, though. He enjoyed waving his claws over the cards and choosing the warmest one for his customers. He just had to add a little flourish to get dragons to buy them, which was great for Milan, since she wanted something flashy to draw in customers.

Many dragons lumped him with Asclepius, an actual user of dark magic, even though the two had never spoken. Ziggy knew when to stay away from real dark magic. They thought that what Ziggy did was either fake or evil, believing he was messing with the natural order of things. Which was outrageous, since magic--dark, light, elemental, necromantic--already existed on Sornieth. All Ziggy did was learn how to harness what was already there. And it proved to be quite profitable, once he could get his claws on a deck of tarot cards to read to passersby.

It seemed that most dragons didn’t really take Ziggy seriously, unless he was away from his mystical fortune telling tent. He rarely talked about his work, and his demeanor drastically changed as well. Inside the tent, he was Ziggy Stardust, a mystical, ethereal being whose aura radiated going with the flow. Outside, he was just Ziggy, a normal, hyperactive spiral who sometimes wanted nothing more than a strong drink.

_Magic Feud_

____Ziggy had no idea why Yanira didn’t seem to like him. The two rarely ever interacted, since she worked all the way at the other end of Skyloft’s breezeway at the ramen shop, and he didn’t much care for ramen. She often spoke rudely to him or just bumped his table and knocked all his cards to the floor, leaving him to clean them up on his own. It was worse when she micromanaged everything. But now the one-sided feud wasn’t fueled by improper tent-pitching; it was fueled by a clashing of magic types.

Ziggy supposed Yanira began to feel threatened when he came around, since he actually made money off telling the future. He did so in a rather flashy way as well. He was well aware of Yanira’s stance on doing magic not for a show but for substance. Every time he came within earshot of her she said substance. But Ziggy was lost on what that substance was supposed to be. Lots of dragons used magic to entertain. Why shouldn’t he?

_Caravan_

____Ziggy came from nowhere. He came from everywhere. Ziggy is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. His magic is mysterious and lovely, true and cruel. Ziggy is often the center of gossip when Skyloft puts up its tents for a while. The only definite piece of his past is that he did not learn the cards on his own--he had help in the form of a traveling psychic caravan.

A young spiral traveled the dark tangles of the Wood in a single file line of other spirals like him. They spent many nights stopped on the roads, lighting lanterns and giving readings to each other. Normal spreads, cutting the deck, having the recipient choose their cards. They howled with laughter and spilled drinks on their decks. Anyone else would have enjoyed the camaraderie of the caravan, but Ziggy hated how small and claustrophobic it felt. So he left one night after everyone fell asleep, and the rest was history.

The tent's flaps billowed gently in a dragon-made breeze. Purple fog seeped out from the cracks, and mysterious ambient music emanated from . . . everywhere, almost. One half of the flaps opens and a voice from inside echoes in your head: "enter, dear visitors, and stay a while!" It fades away with a gentle cackle.

Inside the tent is far larger than it looked outside. The walls are obscured in shadow, and only a spotlight peers down at a circular table, draped in a sapphire cloth. It appears to be a scrap of the sky cut out and stitched together with stars, softer than cotton candy. Atop it sits a basket filled past capacity with goodies.

The owner of the voice steps into the spotlight. Ornate golden lanterns dangle from wings and tail, and the spiral's head is caged as well. A deck of cards floats around them. The spiral gestures smoothly to the basket. "You may take anything from the basket you like. You are also welcome to stay longer and have your fortune told, if you like."
