Jana. A name well known among the gladiators of Khrusos arena. She donned the golden hues and the banner of her king, howling violence upon the skies and brandishing her blade to challengers. Her sword swung clutched fearsome in her grip, her mouth torn open to unleash an almighty warcry, beating the breastplate against her chest.

Her audience with the king saw her kneel, Regalis offering her his hand to bestow her lips upon the monarch’s ring. Her lips felt the cool metal pressing into delicate flesh, and she stood, her gaze sweeping from Regalis to Custos.

“You are no doubt an excellent fighter,” Regalis chuckled. “And yet you are no soldier. Why is that?”

“My kills come not from the masses, but those who wish to fight and test their strength. Being a soldier is to overpower, it is about tactic and unity. But I am not them, I fight alone and I fight equal against my opponent.”

“...I see,” Regalis licked the spit from his teeth, displeased with her answer, but unwilling to argue her. His displeasure soon giving way to a sly grin, keen to speak. “I’ve a challenge for you, then.”

All fighters knew of the challenges of a king. A time honoured tradition known as the Diadema Kheir. A challenge reserved only for the undefeated. But Jana knew such a challenge was not without its greatest risk. Defeat meant death, and it was a burden that sought to squeeze her heart. She watched Regalis’s fluid, feline movement glide across the black marble of his court to slither deft fingers atop Custos’s shoulder.

“Battle my Head Guard,” Regalis grinned, eyes narrow with interest. “Should you defeat him...you take his place at my side. A warrior’s greatest honour, to defend their king.”

Such alluring temptation brought Jana’s gaze to a vivid fixation, eyeing Custos. His apparent disinterest in her was unlike the animosity of a challenger poised shield up in the arena, but one of knowledge, of war and battle and strength Jana knew she had not been at the mercy of before.

But the opportunity to be her king’s warrior brought about a pride that demanded hubris of her, and she met his grin with one of her own, nodding.

“I accept your challenge, Your Highness.”

The arena thundered with the cheers of crowds. The ringing of Jana’s ears was not a new feeling, and neither was the weight of her sword and shield. Her breastplate checked by squires before she ventured into the arena. Her armour caught the glint of the sun and her gaze skyward settled upon the booth containing King Regalis. Through the opposing doors strode Custos in his gleaming armour, white shimmers of sunbeam against the black and gold of his body like teeth tearing open and moving to swallow Jana in leonine destruction. He drew a two handed broadsword embellished with the insignia of the king, no shield adorning his hands. Jana on impulse thought him a fool for entering a battle without a means of defense, but it dawned on her quickly that Custos did not intend to defend himself from her. He intended to make it so she simply had no chance to fight back.

He towered above her, and once the jubilant trumpets sounded across the arena, he was upon her, body twisting and smashing the broadsword into her shield. Jana felt the unbearable pain rippling through the bones of her wrist, her proud shoulder hunched for fear of breaking it. Her attempts to push the man back instead saw her staggering for space, the soles of her boots scraping against fine sand. Custos attacked relentlessly, wielding the colossal weapon as if it were made of simple paper, and with each unbearable shattering blow against Jana’s shield, she watched the metal dent and the wood split. In the shock, Jana did not manage the time to defend herself, Custos’s boot finding her chest to kick her backward and into the arena wall, much to the cheers of the crowd. Her back hit the sunbleached brick and the air fled her lungs, leaving the pit of her stomach weak and her mouth open to gag a cry of pain that would not leave her throat. Her vision swam and her shield lifted in her grip to defend her head in blind combat but a hard shove ripped the shield from her fingers, Custos shoving her with the flat of his sword, letting her hit the ground. He plunged the sword in beside her head and waited.

Jana could not hear the crowd’s screams of elated cheering. She could not see the waves of faceless motion with their arms skyward, nor could she see Regalis’s distant figure standing to clap for his Head Guard. Her eyes remained upon Custos, who loomed over her body a reluctant reaper.

“If you are to kill me,” She spat, voice hoarse and thick with spite. “Do so now. You have won, claim my life as your prize.”

“King Regalis did not believe you deserved a death by my hand,” Custos returned. “He knew you would not win. To still maintain the threat of death would be a sentence, rather than a battle.”

She felt shamed. Her king knew, and yet, he asked this challenge of her. Jana pondered perhaps if it were punishment for her refusal to join his army. A humiliating defeat in the public eye of the city. She could not summon the will even to stand, her broken heart quiet in the recess of her throat. Custos did not stoop to help her, did not offer her his hand to take in a show of chivalry. It had not been a battle of honour and pride, but Regalis’s proof that only the best could take their place among him. And Jana’s throbbing body felt the sting of both a battle lost and the realisation that she would never earn her place.

Jana let the loss consume her. Her training wrought with pain of failure, refusing to stop until her muscles shrieked for pause, tears streaming down her sweating cheeks and lips curled with fury, attacking the training silhouettes until they were bludgeoned into little more than splintered wooden stubs buried in the ground.

Jana knew of the rebellion, just. Whisperings caught on her ears by drunkard merchants by the docks. She cared little for them, for politics in general. But the thought began to linger in the confines of her mind, of a battle between Custos and her once again. She thought, should the rebellion happen, she would make her choice on who to battle. Either she would earn her place beside the rebellion, or she would take Custos’s place as Regalis’s defender. The roads presented were narrow and bitter, but Jana thought she would be forced to take either, when the time called.

She simply wondered then, where she would find herself travelling.
