In a lair composed almost entirely of lovelorn prettyboys, banished royals, dashing rogues, and handsome ghosts, Franz knows that he has all the physical appeal of a sentient lava lamp. It’s not that he’s ugly, per se, it’s just that he’s competing on an uneven playing field—one where all his opponents have expensive uniforms and tragic backstories. He’s come to terms with this.

Besides, his clanmates are always too preoccupied with the crisis of the week—yet another unholy terror Tatlim accidentally unleashed upon the Warren, yet another hack Radiant Eye beaurocrat trying to accuse the clan of squatting at a historical landmark, yet another scandalous development in Velveteen’s ongoing quest for true love—to spare Franz a second glance.

So Franz keeps his head down. He studies magic theory. He practices enchantment under Caieta’s legendary guidance. He teaches himself to knit, because feathers and silks, the only kind of apparel Hanada ever commissions for the clan, offer little to no heat retention. Everyone else might be content to shiver during the winter months in the name of haute couture, but Franz’s feet get cold even on warm days.

Almost unintentionally, Franz surpasses the rest of Caieta’s students in record time. It’s then, after Caieta officially declares him her protégé, that Franz realizes he will most likely inherit the clan one day. What with gloomy Olum, foolish Velveteen, and vainglorious Chamomile all wholly unfit for leadership, there’s really no one else available to do the job. Franz can only hope that, when the time comes, he’ll have stockpiled enough knitwear to weather the frosty reception.
