C O H E E D
THE ROSE BEARER
╭━━━━━━━━╮

Song

There is a place
where the flowers do grow
and the roses smell sweet
on the breeze

There is a place
where th' Memory plays
and wraps itself
in thorns

Chorus
Rose bearer,
show me how
to grow a garden like yours

Rose bearer,
show me now,
the memories you have loved

end chorus

There is a sky
where time flies
and petals float
on the breeze

There is a sky
where sadness has gone
and the sweetness is
winding around me

Chorus x2

╰━━━━━━━━╯

Coheed’s mother was a Pearlcatcher without a pearl. There were rumors that her damaged pearl was stolen by a dragon called the ‘Shadow Thief’ who used the cracked orb to steal away the memories of others. It left Teska with nowhere to store memories of her own and instead, she cradled her eggs as if they were pearls, funneling her thoughts into the golden shells. If she couldn’t remember, then perhaps her children could.

Coheed hatched with some of these stolen memories. They were fragmented and broken just like the cracked shell of the egg he was born from. Bits and pieces of fleeting light, laughter, the feeling of soft soil underfoot, but the strongest memory that Coheed inherited from his mother was that of a scent. It was something softly sweet, a faded aroma that mixed delicately with the air.

Coheed created his own pearl from the fragmented eggshell he hatched from and began storing memories of his own in the lustrous orb, but he never forgot the scent. He longed to find out where it came from, to experience it for himself. Coheed’s search made him explore, although he did so in an unusual way that had the young hatchling attempting to sniff everything and everyone he came across. It was a sunny day during the spring when Coheed finally wandered into the gardens and found the source of the scent; a blooming rose with dew laden petals. The hatchling was ecstatic and returned each day to smell the rose, relishing in the scent that had loitered in his memories since birth.

Then the aroma began to fade, the petals on the rose turning brown and falling softly to the ground until the flower was gone. Coheed didn’t understand why the rose had withered, but the excitement in his eyes quickly faded to tears when the scent became only a memory once more. It was a kind Wildclaw called Alkaloid who found him crying. “It’s okay,” the pale dragon said softly, “they’ll bloom again.” Coheed nodded sadly, perhaps the flowers would return, but he wanted to capture the scent, to be surrounded by it and never let it fade into a memory.

Coheed knew that the pearls his kind created were designed to store memories, but perhaps he could use the same process to preserve other artifacts. When the next set of flowers blossomed, Coheed stopped adding layers to his pearl. Instead, the young dragon plucked the flowers and enveloped the base of each petal in the secretion that he would have used to construct his pearl. Days passed and faded to weeks, and the petals never withered or died, instead they grew. The petals branched into stems and vines that wrapped themselves around Coheed’s form. Periodically, the Pearlcatcher would recall a memory and a new rose would blossom from the lattice of thorns and leaves, emitting a sweet scent that reminded the dragon of his past.

Now, there are rumors about a Pearlcatcher whose pearl never grows. Instead, his memories are sealed away in the winding rose plants that encase his form. He is surrounded always by a sweet scent that fills the air and it is said that any dragon who receives a petal from Coheed’s roses will be able to remember everything they’ve forgotten. One such petal rests sewn into layers of lace that adorn a Pearlcatcher whose pearl was stolen long ago. Teska smiles when she touches the petal her son gave her and she can finally remember.

Withered Rose Rose Quartz Wilting Rose
Pigments of lifetime
To a point of start,
A throw of light, a windbell's chime,
A fleeting scent, a time apart.

An early beginning, armed with knowledge of the world,
A catacomb for a mental hoard.
Thoughts prickle back of mind,
And urge one to search on for the past
That it has been bind.

A single object, interwoven with a desperate path,
The tangles of an everlasting rose,
Reside in which the future stretches past,
& memories bloom & grow.
