______ Selene will always put who she wants to be before who she is. A dragon that had been born without dream and talent, she believes firmly that she owes everything she is to the Fae named Indi who leads her clan. And as a result she's become the role of the protector. Her guard armor has, in a way, melted itself into her skin and she can't really turn back.
She's been with Indi too long for that-- seeing any harm come to the Fae would likely drive Selene off the edge. Her devotion and fierceness knows no bounds and she stands by Indi day and night, which leads most to believe that she's a little like an annoying personal assistant to a very capable Fae. In reality, it's more like they became friends along the way, but Selene refuses to let her 'little Indi' lift a single finger herself.

______ Her task is a huge one, but she enjoys it. She enjoys being the fierce, unmovable block that one has to cross before they are permitted to be alone with Indi, she enjoys the fact that she is indispensable. Her position comes with a certain pride, and yet a certain acceptance that she won't necessarily have any of the glory.
Sometimes, alone by herself at night (and don't let her catch anyone saying this), Selene likes to just goof off with or without Indi-- making silly jokes and going out of character, like the little girl she never was.

______ In short, she's something with realized purpose, and yet someone not unwilling to let go of that and live a little; the perfect balance of work and play, although most would tell you she has a third eye hovering over Indi at all times and that her devotion is far from healthy.
But most don't know her past the armor.

______ To vow your obedience to someone, and declare your life to be theirs. It's really not a task suited for a dragon whose wings have yet to taste the world in all its eternity: all its joys and miseries, all its friendships and betrayals.

______ Ever since she was young, Selene never liked the night. She didn't snore and flip over inelegantly in her sleep like the others, and instead she spent both day and night awake. It was because she was afraid of the darkness, really. Afraid of the empty void of her dreamscape, and how, when the other hatchlings began to talk about what they would be like when they grew up, she found the rapid flow of conversation too fast for her to process.
Ambitionless, embittered and most of all, faithless, the nocturne would hide into the dusk to find the remnants of her inner peace. But as much of a precocious young hatchling she was, young minds were always twisted, always a little well, younger, than the ones that came before them.

______ When that fateful day arrived, the riverbank was all but still. Selene, who was used to the quiet hum of life buzzing from all corners of her midnight retreat, knew something was wrong.
"Who's there?" She growled, because she knew there had to be someone.
And there she saw it; two little green eyes across the bank of the river, staring with the intensity of what could only be a Fae.
"I'm Indi." The voice came, a little too similar to all the sounds that her respite lacked; a little too alive with the music of the night.
"There's no one with that name in my clan."
"That's why I'm here on the other side of the bank." The green eyes twinkled, and if Selene could trust her eyes in this lighting, she could swear she saw the Fae smile.

______ The nocturne bared her teeth (but it was useless-- her cousin was much greater at sparring than she ever would be). She quickly tried to think of what an enemy would be doing here (but it was useless-- she wasn't as cunning as her brother). She geared up her wings for flight (but it was useless-- if the stranger was determined, then Selene would never make it back to the clan on time).
Then she remembered that the eyes were unmistakably a Fae's-- which meant one thing, that the dragon before her was weak in all senses of the word. Even Selene would probably destroy the stranger in combat. Her bared fangs turned a little into a smirk as she readied some retort on the circumstances.

______ However, the Fae seemed to have read her mind.
"I'm not interested in fighting against you."
Selene huffed. Just when she had found something she could without doubt take down. "You're backing away now? Coward."
"Maybe so, but if I fight you now, I will lose. And I can't lose yet."
"Excuse me?"
Something on the other side of the river moved, and Selene could see the twinkle of some aqua wings as the eyes started to disappear further away.
"I have to go back and train now. I'll be there one day. I will lead a clan with my own claws. Wait for me until then, other-sider."
And then the voice's melody disappeared and the true music of the night resumed, but the nocturne remained troubled and oddly enough, she felt deserted.

______ Selene had of course been born into a great clan where prestige and honor took place over everything. She had been born to two strong parents and born alongside feisty and brilliant siblings. She had seen things hatchlings could only dream of the privilege of seeing, and yet what amazed her most in the world was that lone Fae on the other side of the riverbank.
Everywhere she looked was greatness, to the point where it suffocated the hatchling inside of her. Her precocious behavior was born out of a deep necessity: she needed to evolve continuously and yet never be noticed. Because if she exploded and made a sound, how could she be sure that would be the right noise to make?
And yet that Fae with those emerald eyes stood in her mind the most. How could that Fae, how dare that Fae dream so much? Dream to start a new clan, dream to lead and dream to be something more than what she was?
For once, she had a peaceful night of rest and relaxation.

______ The next morning, Selene left her clan. Left all that pride, all that stuffy nonsense to which she had belonged, but to which she no longer did belong.
It took only a few days to find that Fae-- she only needed to fly over the riverbank and suddenly she was in an expansive field where the blue-winged dragon was fighting by tooth and claw; unfortunately, the Fae was younger than Selene and she was struggling.

______ At first, the Nocturne wanted to back away-- the dragon before her was what she had left everything for and, as of now, she wasn't much special. If she flew back, she could reach her home without anyone even noticing her disappearance.
But two things came to mind: one, no one would notice, no matter how fast or late she arrived home. Two, the Fae before her, this Indi, despite all her wounds and the fact that she was on the brink of defeat, was clearly smiling with joy Selene could only dream of having.

______ The Nocturne stepped into the fight, and her presence was accepted wordlessly. The two dragons, for some reason together, didn't speak for the whole of the trial. And in the end, when they emerged victorious, Selene cut Indi off before she could speak.
"If you're making a clan, you'll need protection."
And that was that.
