When an Ice egg freezes, the ice around it facets itself in such a way as to focus light and warmth into the egg. Many ice nests are built the same way, including the one Rakta's egg was in. They gain warmth from sunlight, but odd things may happen under moonlight...
The clutch was predicted to hatch under the full moon - a sign of good luck. And this moon would be the brightest seen in a very long time. The clan gathered as the moon rose, its bright light beaming and refracting into the nest and eggs. But as it tracked across the sky, the moon began to turn blood red. The dragons turned in fear, wondering what would happen to the eggs. The eggs began to shake, to hatch, as the moon was overtaken by the red shadow - but as the shadow left, the eggs stilled. Hours passed, with no movement. Then one of the three eggs began to move again, and cracked open to reveal a baby Skydancer, the same color as the blood moon. The other eggs never hatched.
Rakta was cast out by her birth clan, seen as an omen of bad luck. She wandered, lost, and somehow found herself all the way up in Nature to the north. She tried to keep her circumstances a secret, but then she began having strange dreams every time the moon turned full. Some seemed to be messages, projected as words and emotions as if from another Skydancer to her. She chose a Dreameater as a familiar to eliminate the worst dreams, but they still came. After many years of this, she came to realize that the moon itself was speaking to her...
