Biography

The Unexpected Guest

There was a large commotion on the day that Khrome turned up at The Lastsparks gate, and most of that large commotion was from a very small source...Fluxx was not impressed that her little brother had decided to join the clan.

Having spent the last few years at leader Laurel's side busily establishing the lair, Fluxx had not given much thought to her birth den, though she knew that her parents laid regular clutches. The fae had only met one of her brothers in that time, and Vadol still visited occasionally, bringing news from his own clan in the neighboring Light region. But he never stayed long, and Fluxx was pleased about that - she was not particularly good at sharing, and a few hours was all she could manage before she began staring pointedly at clock on the wall of the reception chamber. So when one of her younger siblings turned up at the front entrance one morning asking for an audience, the feisty female mustered all the willpower in her tiny body to remain calm, though her curiosity (and annoyance) was well and truly piqued.

Khrome was a scrawny young dragon, with dark spotted wings that contrasted with the cyan contour that ran like a neon racing stripe along the length his body. A pair of thick glasses took up much of his face, but his bright eyes shone through, taking in his surroundings with great interest. He wore a lab coat with leaking pens in the pocket, and his wings were cluttered with scrawled notes and math equations that made no sense at all to Fluxx, who had little interest in such things. She took one look at Khrome and decided in an instant that they would have nothing in common. She perched on her usual place at Laurel's shoulder, puffing out her chest importantly, and whispered into her pal's ear, urging the harpy to make it a quick meeting. Something about this little brother had touched a nerve, and Fluxx couldn't quite put a claw on it. Perhaps it was because Khrome was a fae like herself - a genetic rarity in the family that didn't come up very often, and something that had always made her feel unique. She seethed silently as Laurel invited the youngling to introduce himself.

The Unwanted Brother

Khrome nervously shuffled from foot to foot, before clearing his throat to make a shaky greeting. He explained that he was a budding alchemist, whose experiments involved the use of power currents and various elixirs and substances. The young scientist thought he was close to creating a new type of metal, but needed to work in lab with more specialised equipment. He had heard from Vadol that their sister was second in command at a Lightning lair that had a well-stocked laboratory, and he humbly requested The Lastsparks patronage, in exchange for full access to his findings. Khrome looked hopefully up at Fluxx, who noted the excitement in the eyes of many of her clanmates. Jealous, she huffed loudly, but knew the decision was ultimately not hers, and glowered when it was announced that her brother could stay.

Overjoyed, the young scientist flew up to greet his sister properly, but Fluxx, irritated, flicked her crests in warning, and he pulled back from the friendly hug he had been going for. Keeping a respectful distance behind his sullen sister, Khrome was shown around the laboratories, and introduced to Scunner and Technus, who worked nearby. They were thrilled with their new fae lab-mate, and were fascinated when he explained his theories to them. Offering their help immediately, the team soon had Khrome's equipment up and running, and over the weeks the three become firm friends.

It seemed as though everyone admired the clan's new resident, all except for Fluxx of course. She avoided spending time with her brother, her envy at his obvious intelligence and the way the other dragons had befriended him so quickly had put her in a permanent bad mood. Khrome was aware that his presence had offended Fluxx in some way, and he was hurt that she was uninterested in getting to know him.

"There is nothing more exciting than the thrill of a new discovery! Sister, everything that we already know is but an infinitesimal fraction of what the scientific world has to offer! Think of the possibilities, the mysteries! Sister? Fluxx? Wake up!"

The Proud Sister

After several weeks Laurel grew tired of Fluxx's mood, and decided to talk to her friend about her feelings. This would generally be deemed an extremely bad idea, but desperate times called for desperate measures, so Laurel told Fluxx something that she had heard from Scunner. According to the spiral, Khrome had been offered places at several of the Shifting Expanse's most prestigious scientific research centres, but he had turned them down in favour of The Lastsparks, whose own laboratories were nowhere near as sophisticated. When asked why, Khrome admitted he had come because he had grown up listening to stories of Fluxx - the big sister who was Second in Command of a lair of dragons and beasts, and a fae just like himself! The whole family were proud of her, and she had never known it. Laurel also told Fluxx that Khrome apparently drove his lab-mates crazy sometimes with his quirks, such as a penchant for taking command of the whole workshop, and that when he got stressed-out his stripes would flash. His habit of squeaking excitedly had also caused several dangerous accidents involving spilt hazardous chemicals.

"Hey, that sounds like me!" Fluxx exclaimed, chuckling as she realised that perhaps she and her brother weren’t so different after all. Her guilt at judging him so quickly brought a blush to her cheeks, and she hung her head, realising with abject horror that she would now have to....apologise. With a sigh she flew to the lab and skulked in the doorway, waiting to be noticed. Khrome was working alone for once, reading through a sheaf of dog-eared notes at a workbench when his eye caught the flashing circuit patterns of Fluxx's wings. Sharing a look, the two fae met in the middle of the room and after a long and awkward silence, Fluxx coughed out a word that may have been 'sorry'. Her brother sensed a genuine remorse though, and graciously accepted the apology, inviting her to sit with him and catch up. Soon they were chatting and laughing like old friends, finding that although they may have different interests, they shared many traits that made getting along fairly easy and comfortable.

Now instead of avoiding Khrome, Fluxx actively reminds everyone that he is her brother. She can often be seen (and heard) marching down the corridors with him, shouting things like "Out of the way, my brother has important work to do!" and "Do you know my brother here - our chief alchemist? Yeah, he probably got his brains from me." Proud and unashamed to admit it, Fluxx is Khrome's biggest fan, and although they spend approximately half the time engaged in high-pitched bickering, it usually gives way to harmless sibling banter in the end. Usually.
