Biography
|
A modest and genial scientist whose work on the SETI project is notable, Jansky is an elder dragon who has dedicated his life to his career. Struck by lightning in his youth when out stargazing one night, the damage destroyed Jansky's wings and blinded him permanently. But the accident didn't put the bogsneak off his fascination with the mysteries of space - instead he took up radioastronomy, as his hearing became highly acute due to his loss of sight. As a young adult Jansky had a prosthetic fitted over his wing stumps with a dish that helped him listen more closely to the stars, even if he could no longer see them. Decades later and after many years of tireless listening, the bogsneak still hasn't given up the hope that his sensitive ears will one day stumble across a message from another world, though just sitting and losing himself in the familiar noises of deep space never fails to bring a sense of calm to the senior's heart. Far from being a UFO conspiracy theorist, Jansky's beliefs regarding life on other planets are rooted in scientific fact and probability, though he will always listen to alternate theories (and arguments) patiently, and with interest. The bogsneak's attitude contrasts greatly to that of his more confrontational research partner, Arroway, who tends to be rather dogmatic in her passion for the subject. Over the years Jansky has learned that the topic of extra-terrestrial life can be a volatile topic, often sparking strong emotions such as fear and anger, and even offending some deeply religious types. But there is also great wonder, awe, and an irresistible sense of adventure there, and the like-minded often flock together in meetings and lectures to contemplate and celebrate the many secrets of the cosmos. This is how an elderly, liver-spotted bogsneak met a young and passionate fae, and Arroway soon became Jansky's assistant, both of them bringing their own unique approaches and ideas to the project. When Jansky eventually retires, he hopes Arroway will continue their work and make great strides, but for now he turns his ears to the sky once again, hoping someone or something is up there listening too.
"Contact may not happen in my lifetime, or for many generations to come, but my heart tells me that we are not alone, and that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves. It is only time and space that keep us apart."
