Biography

Ataraxy - Chief Architect
The dragon that invited you in. He seems quite busy with construction. Could this tiny Fae have built this entire lair?

The past

Ataraxy wasn't the only dragon who awoke before sunrise that morning. Something slight, maybe a shift in the floors or a faint crackling sound, had pulled dozens of Faes from their sleep. There was an ominous feeling in the air. A small, worried cloud of dragons was gathering outside. Ataraxy joined them just in time to see the clan's entire lair crumble behind him. It was a victim of success, collapsing under its own weight. It was all over in less than a minute, surviving dragons scattering in every direction.

Staring at the pile of splintered wood and shattered amber, it occurred to Ataraxy that he had just lost everything. He perched on a chunk of rubble and waited until morning, hoping someone would come to help. No one did.

With no more home to go to, Ataraxy set out to create his own lair. He had considered, during his long and silent wait through the night, simply finding an existing lair and trying to fit in with the clan living there. But then he had wondered... how could he be sure his new home wouldn't suffer the same fate? How could he be confident that, if he found a new family, they wouldn't disappear just as suddenly? He couldn't. He'd have to build it all himself to be sure.

It would have to be a sturdy place. Something that could stand safely generation after generation, something that could stand up to any disaster. For a single Fae to tackle such a monumental task alone would be ridiculous. Ataraxy would try anyway. Between demanding requirements, multiple construction drafts, and a work force of one, construction was painfully slow. Three months passed before he had a space fit to shelter even a few dragons.

Luckily, his project attracted a bit of helpful attention after that. A Tundra to help harvest trees for sap, and for company. An Imperial for protection. The project picked up from there, gathering more residents and more help.
Currently

Ataraxy sleeps very little, easily jolted awake by the smallest disturbances. He spends hours gripped by the urge to check and re-check every support beam in the middle of the night. It is not uncommon to see him circle a single small room hundreds of times, searching for any hint of a flaw. Even something as small as an uneasy feeling or an imagined shadow is enough for him to insist on rebuilding the entire section from scratch.

His fear of potential flaws in his lair is almost as great as his fear of being outside the lair. Ataraxy has developed something like agoraphobia, becoming terrified beyond reason at the thought of straying too far from the lair.

Despite intense paranoia and many sleepless nights, Ataraxy finds himself surprisingly happy much of the time. He takes pride in the fact that his lair is coming along with all the stability he had hoped for. The dragons gathering in his lair formed a clan, and for a while he was even their leader.
The coup
Pantomime had hardly finished informing Ataraxy that she intended to overthrow him as clan leader when the first attack came his way. The surprise attack left him startled, but he was able to escape before sustaining any real injury. It's possible that this was exactly what the surprise attack was meant to do: To begin the battle with Ataraxy shaken and fleeing.

As the news spread through the lair, many dragons joined Ataraxy to oppose Pantomime. However, Pantomime came up with quite the force herself. When it came for the two sides to clash, Pantomime dove in while Ataraxy stayed a safe distance away. Though skilled in magic, Ataraxy had no offensive abilities. Instead, he focused on healing and leadership.

Ataraxy's healing abilities were surprisingly powerful. His leadership, on the other hand, came mainly in hesitant suggestions. When backed into a corner, he could think of no strategy but retreat. Pantomime allowed this retreat every time. As the fighting went on, the Fae's sparse leadership led to his allies exposing more and more vulnerability. Retreat calls came more often, and what fighting they did do became increasingly more disorganized.

Ataraxy came to understand two things. Firstly, this was not a war he could win. Secondly, Pantomime had no intention of causing severe or unnecessary harm. With this in mind, Ataraxy requested to negotiate peace. He would give up his role as clan leader if Pantomime would allow him to stay as chief architect, having the final say in all matters of lair construction. Pantomime consulted her adviser on the matter. She then entirely disregarded her adviser's recommendations, and agreed to Ataraxy's conditions moments later.

Many were terrified at the idea of Pantomime, not one known for being sane, being put in charge. A few dragons even fled, afraid of retribution for opposing Pantomime's takeover. However, things have been smooth so far. Pantomime's orders are often nonsensical or otherwise ridiculous, but none have done the clan any harm. In fact, her willingness to give an order (rational or not) in stressful times may make her a better leader than the hesitant and anxious Ataraxy.

While he enjoyed his time spent in charge, Ataraxy found a strange relief in not having to worry about matters beyond construction anymore. Even he is beginning to think that the change in leadership may have been for the better.

Familiar

The perfect companion for a dragon with high anxiety and frequent nightmares is of course a Dreameater. The Dreameater follows Ataraxy around restlessly at dusk, sometimes nudging him towards his sleeping area if it feels he has been awake too long into the night.

Though Dreameaters can be vicious creatures when they feel threatened, this one takes care to be gentle with the tiny Fae. It's hard to tell if this is genuine affection, or if the Dreameater just knows not to bite the hand that feeds it.
