Biography

RAEN
[ earth • caster ]

patron of journeys | courageous, calm, articulate

The Arcanist sculpted Raen, though he could never keep him. The disciple that came from the Earth belonged to it, never satisfied without the passage of stone against his claws. He was one of the old, after all, born following the era of dawn when dragonkind were breathed into existence and Raen's consciousness awoke like a growing flame. In his youth, he knew only the Starfall Isles and he'd learned those rocks better than any tutelage imparted upon him. Even in the years back when Raen prowled the outer reaches of the Observatory like a gargoyle (but he stayed, like a son), his arcane-blooded companions could never reach him. The plague-caster, whose rotten bones were as old as his, fussed over him like an old crone, or perhaps even a sibling, if he could possibly know how that felt. Yet he turned his back on oaths and binding blood after the tide-caster was punished and cast from beneath the Arcanist's wings. Loyalty among brethren was too easily broken – and so he caved, embraced the Earth Mother that had also sired him, and left.

Most often Raen journeys from one side of the continent to the other, known among mortals as the creature that needs no rest. They see him along the sun-parched horizon or perched along the craggy cliffs: the traveler, who carves the roads taken and guides the lost to what they seek. Since leaving the Arcanist's sanctuary, Raen has also found his place among other free primordials. He is warm with his other brother, the great wyrm of burial sites, and he guides them to where tethered souls await. The winds as well can always find his ear — particularly the one of the north, who calls upon him more than he would like. And yet still, far too often, his heart's journey leads him back to the Isles — until he remembers why he cannot stay, and the Earth draws him back out again.

❝ Don't watch for me. I'll know my way. ❞
