Biography
NIJAH
[ faceless • wanderer ]
son of the icewarden | withdrawn, decisive, penitent
[ faceless • wanderer ]
son of the icewarden | withdrawn, decisive, penitent
Nijah surely had a home and a family, once. He's spent his entire remembered life trying to recall the sins of his past: the twisting path that led him to the Nameless Amulet, and the identity he sacrificed to wear it. Often he gazes into its sickly green gemstone and wonders if the contents of his memory are stored within there, waiting to be shattered and released — or if they're gone forever, taken by a promise he cannot even regret. Indecision haunts him, but the only thing worse than who he is right now would be to lose more. At least when he awoke in the Hewn City, alone, lost, and nothing, he had the amulet. Though Nijah doesn't know the darkness the Shade-touched artifact possesses, its power still whispers to him and he keeps it around his neck always. Besides, he reasons, his past self must have gone through much to wear it. And there's a certain charm to being Nobody. Magic cannot find him. No one notices him until he speaks. After he departs, his presence has a way of fading from everyone's memory, until they forget he was ever there at all. No longer does he have to fear making mistakes. Surely that's the reason he found the amulet in the first place, isn't it?
His quest for answers has taken Nijah across the continent, during which he's given himself his name and fashioned his mask he always wears. It's haunting to look back into a face he cannot remember, scars he doesn't understand, pale blue eyes inherited from parents who might as well not exist. He's made his trade as both a hero and a thief, willing to slay monsters or steal from coffers, whatever helps him get by. During his travels, he happened upon the legend of the wish-granter: a massive dragon with innumerable eyes who seemed to have an intricate understanding of the world. He impressed her by being one of the few creatures of Sorneith she could not see, but there was a familiar twinkle in her eye at the presence of his amulet. He would not let her claws touch it, and so instead she promised him information if he would do her favors. While of course Nijah should have known better than to agree, he felt no choice, and thus began his trials.
To imprison her daughter, to know the amulet's stone came beyond the cosmos.
To carry bones to the Garden Beyond Time, to know of the Shade and its artifacts.
To free that horrible slime child, to know he was born deep within the Icefields.
All of it seemed never-ending, and each time he would return to Cadence who would have forgotten him in his absence and beg her to remember him and the errand she sent him on. He's never quite sure if she truly does, but there's always something more she desires of him. On a few occasions has Nijah met her son, a font of passion and rebelliousness. She seems to not have a mind to shackle him and Nijah's come to wonder why — though it seems to be something with the brilliant pink pearl he's cultivated, and not his specialty of digging up roots.
