Dots note to Bill:
Dear Bill,
You won, you were right. I messed up and I fully admit it. I'll stay away for now if that is what you wish. You have your charge and Stanley and Miss Pacifica, and you certainly won't be sent back to the Nightmare Realm again. I would love to stay your friend, but if you don't want that, I'll respect your wishes.
Although if we could avoid fighting like that, I think it would mean a lot to our charges. Mabel misses her brother, and I can guess he misses her too. Just because we're not getting along right now doesn't mean they can't be together, of course.
I'm sorry I put you in danger. I don't regret saving you though, and I never will. I should not have had too, but I made a foolish choice to go into the woods.
I'm glad I finally told you my secret though. About the human thing. Please don't leave this note lying around, but yes. You've most likely heard the legends about certain humans being chosen to become demons. Believe me when I say I do not know why I was chosen and never will. Your... Great uncle, I think, was my demon. You might've heard of him, he was a bit older than you. We were together for fifty years when I died and became a demon.
I was human two millennia ago. I lived in Roman Britain. It was before it was officially conquered, but there were some small settlements. You probably knew that. But I had a wife, many brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews... I was a banker. I loved my life. My wife and demon and I went to Pompeii for a trip after hearing about the city. There were also business opportunities for me there. But we all know what happened to Pompeii and my wife, demon, and I all perished. I can only assume my demon didn't make it, because when I was reborn as a tiny blue square, he was supposed to be there and he wasn't.
I found that he had one relative left: you. I sought you out at first with the intention of finding help, and maybe trying to repay you for what my demon did for me. But then... I wanted to be friends with you. Because I like you.
We both know what happened next. I'm sorry. I'm so very sorry I never told you, I was just frightened and the legend also says we're weaker and less useful. That scares me. I don't want to be kicked out of the family because I couldn't help when it was needed.
I hope this has cleared up a little and I wanted to give you a more complete story. I cannot guarantee you've read this entire letter, but even if you don't feel like speaking with me any more, I'll still have your back.
I would never have sold you out to Stanford. I don't know what I could swear on to convince you. My bond? I hope you believe me.
Maybe one day things will improve again; I hope they do. Until then, good luck with everything you do. It's obvious your charge adores you completely; you'll never be alone again and I'm so happy for you.
Your colleague,
Dot Matrix
