MORBUS Above all else Kobari seeks to serve. He serves his Necromancer and mate, Kishna, with a loyalty that is both blind to her faults and uncomplaining of her less than considerate treatment. He serves his clan as a healer and in all the ways that they call on him at all hours of the night and day. As a Necromancer himself he of course serves Plaguebringer, or tries to, with fervid prayers that hint at the desperation of a secret sinner. Kobari is extremely hard working. Though he passed all three trials Kishna calls on him to perform the duties of a Necroservus, so he sees to those tasks in addition to the more traditional Infectionist rituals and ceremonies of his office. Kishna has also made him available to Shiv’s Eleven, as well as the Inculcators, in an effort to place herself by proxy at the center of all things of import that happen within the clan. To meet the demands of so many, Kobari has developed a photographic memory and a preternatural ability to make an impossible schedule slot into place like elegant masonry. He has no time for himself and no aspirations beyond what Kishna sets for him. But occasionally, during a few treasured days out of every other month, he gets to be with Zayn. The younger Necromancer had been brought to Outfit Vector after being severely injured and given into Kobari’s care. The wounds were grievous and rotted through with the infection of a primal Plague Ghoul that pushed Kobari beyond the limits of his ability to contain. But he managed to keep Zayn from death, and together they fought back the infection vein by vein and limb by limb. Once he healed, Zayn remained with the Outfit to regain his strength and to learn how to master the Ghoul’s infection that still lay dormant within him. Kobari assisted him, and in follow up visits and long days of research found something he had never had before. Something solely for himself. But no one who endures the pressures that Kobari does can grow straight, and the emotional and physical deprivations of his life are by extension visited upon his servant and slave, the Neutralized Ghoul, Ragrak. Kobari uses the tarnished mirror without consideration or thought, holding both his health and his Skydancer mate as hostage to his good behavior. The very worst jobs are put to Ragrak, chief of these being Kobari’s secret correspondence with the unholy necromancer Miazma. Animator of the dead, Miazma has seduced Kobari to the idea that his abilities to heal even the most grievous wounds and sicknesses are Mother’s gift, and so to use it to mend her corpses it is by definition a holy endeavor. Addicted to the feelings of mastery and control the work gives him, Kobari returns to her again and again despite swearing off the blasphemy after the completion of each dark ritual. He lives tortured by his sins, living each day in mortal terror of discovery even while harboring a sickly hope it will come and finally end an unsustainable existence. |
History
Like many who take the Trials, Kobari came from a long line of proud Necromancers. He studied hard under his parents, preparing for the day that he would prove himself to Mother. When that day came, he left his home at the base of the Great Furnace and journeyed to the Wyrmwound.
Kobari did well in his Trials. By the 18th day he'd mastered disease and proudly written down his name in the annuals of the Necromantic Council. Immediately he found himself courted by a number of clans, each clambering for his service and seeking to woo him with gifts of bone and blade. While many of these clans were well-established, Kobari ultimately chose to make his home with Outfit Vector, a small but up-and-coming force within the Plague for the Dominance Wars.
For six months Kobari's life was everything he'd hoped it to be and more. He had the respect of the dragon's around him, he upheld the honor of his calling, and he did good work baptizing Exalted with strengthening Plague and helping them to prepare for a life in service of Plaguebringer. What was more, he was good at what he did and he enjoyed it. Even Khatun Shiv would shutter her heat pits in his presence, cognizant of the higher power that he was a living symbol of. And then Kishna came.
By the time of the younger Necromancer's arrival, Outfit Vector had grown in leaps and bounds and emerged as a new powerhouse of the Wandering Contagion. The clan's reputation drew her, and she was not at all dismayed to find a Necromancer already in its service. Kishna challenged Kobari to a Necromantic Duel and he was forced to face her in front of all the assembled mirrors of the clan. Plague Tender Arcaza served as referee and sacrifice, offering up her body as a living conduit through which Kishna's and Kobari's power battled and clashed. In the end, Kobari was too tentative, unwilling to direct enough power from healing to infecting to breach Kishna's defensives. She overwhelmed him in 10 humiliating seconds and left him a convulsing wreck on the ground.
With her mastery proven to all, Kishna immediately assumed the mantle of Outfit Vector's Necromancer. Kobari should have left. He would have left, but Kishna offered him a choice. He could stay, if he was willing to serve beneath her and give her children; to sire the next generation of Necromancers. With his confidence in himself badly shaken and fearing an unknown future, Kobari agreed. He adopted Kishna's Necromantic Symbol as his own, substituting the common gaspéite for her royal ruby, and meekly deferred to her judgement in all things. He has been serving ever since.
