King was a natural-born wanderer. Though his eyes reflect the Plague nest he hatched from, his parents were from Earth and Light, and King was partially raised in Wind. Needless to say, he was presented with an entire mix of cultures from a young age.

He had been a relatively well-adjusted hatchling; a fast learner and, despite his relatively small size for a guardian, a decent fighter as well. His parents were happily in love and the clan was wealthy enough that King always had food to eat. He thought that he would like to be a warrior when he was old enough, or perhaps an ambassador.

King woke one sweltering summer night to the sound of shrieks and screams. He hastily snatched up the blunted sword leaned against the shelf of his possessions and scrambled out of his family's den to a grisly scene. Dragons clashed all over the clearing. His clanmates were pinned beneath hulking ridgebacks, and even an imperial gnashed its teeth and batted dragons aside like playthings. King watched in horror as his father, a tiny fae, was skewered by the imperial's claws. She was dead in an instant.

A wave of panic and numbness went down King's body and the sword fell from his mouth. Drawn by the sound, a nearby wildclaw looked up from where she had been collecting goods off of a fallen body and snarled at him. She turned toward him and her tail whipped through the air with a crack of warning. King cowered.

Every fiber of his being wanted to fight, to be brave and avenge his father... but he couldn't. Deep inside he knew he didn't have the capability, and he was too afraid to die trying. He let out a cry of fear as the wildclaw lashed out, clawing a mark into the scales around his eye.

His salvation came in the form of an Ethereal Trickster--King's most recent capture on his ventures out with fighting dragons. The fox bounded out of the burning bestiary and landed in a flurry on his back. With a lurch, King was spun and hidden in the smoke of the creature's tail just long enough for him to run for the bushes.

After that, King became a wanderer. He went from place to place, a haze of loss clouding his mind, but the Trickster, Loki, was always a few steps away to nudge him along when the guardian needed it. He was old enough and had learned enough to survive on his own, but it was a lonely life. So, naturally, when King found another lonely guardian, with her own ethereal canine, he took her under his wing. Ashamed of the cowardice he had demonstrated in the face of danger, and of leaving his family behind, King vowed to protect Shale.

King and Shale journeyed together for a long time after that. Dragons simply seemed to gravitate to the pair of friends, sensing their power and ability. Eventually King dubbed the group Umbra Sanguis, and began to make it a point to take in dragons like himself and Shale; dragons who needed somewhere to belong. King's vow to protect Shale extended to all of the dragons in his new clan. He built the structure of the clan by himself and ran it for many long months before finally deciding that he was too old to maintain it by himself any longer. He passed the leadership onto his most trusted friend, Shale.
